Galaxy Watch Enhances Heart Health Tracking for World Heart Day
In recognition of World Heart Day, Samsung highlights how everyday health tracking features on the Galaxy Watch empower users to manage their cardiovascular wellbeing proactively.

Recognizing World Heart Day and Daily Prevention
Heart disease stands as the leading cause of death globally, prompting organizations like the World Health Organization and the World Heart Federation to observe World Heart Day on September 29. As seasonal transitions bring wider temperature gaps between day and night, blood vessels can constrict and heighten the risk of cardiovascular disease. Recognizing these risks, Samsung emphasizes that maintaining cardiovascular wellness relies on proactive daily habits rather than reactive treatment.
Making small lifestyle choices—such as ensuring proper rest or fitting in brief periods of physical exercise—adds up over time. To support these habits, the Samsung ecosystem provides tools through the Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health platforms, helping individuals monitor physiological changes and better understand how everyday habits impact their overall physical condition.
Understanding the Heart Health Score and Daily Metrics
The American Heart Association outlines Life’s Essential 8 as foundational measures for sustaining cardiovascular health, encompassing factors like diet, exercise, sleep, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and smoking cessation. Translating these complex factors into actionable insights can often prove challenging for everyday users.
To address this, Samsung Health features a Heart Health Score that processes indicators such as daily activity levels, sleep duration, body composition, and vascular load. By converting these variables into a unified, straightforward score, the app helps users track their habits dynamically. For example, if a user's moderate-to-high intensity activity drops over a few consecutive days, the system reflects this change in the score and prompts the user to resume physical activity.
Advanced Sensor Technology on the Wrist
The hardware powering these insights is the built-in BioActive Sensor, which consolidates three precision capabilities into a single component: an optical heart rate sensor for PPG measurements, an electrocardiogram sensor, and a bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor.
By performing a calibration once every four weeks using a home blood pressure monitor, users can check their blood pressure directly from their wrist. Additionally, placing a finger on the watch's side electrode for 30 seconds records an electrocardiogram to identify potential signs of abnormal heartbeats, including atrial fibrillation. The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature continuously monitors rhythm signals throughout the day, providing alerts if abnormal patterns repeat.
Around-the-Clock Monitoring and Sleep Analysis
Cardiovascular activity continues unabated whether a user is awake or asleep. When worn overnight, the Galaxy Watch evaluates five vital signs: sleep heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature, and blood oxygen saturation. These readings are continuously compared against the user's personal baseline.
Upon waking, the device sends notifications if it detects significant deviations from the baseline, allowing individuals to rest, recover, or consult medical professionals early. In various instances globally, these capabilities have assisted with the early detection of risks such as atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, proving that subtle wrist-based alerts can support timely medical interventions.
Connected Care and Sharing Health Data with Loved Ones
Managing wellness often extends beyond an individual to include family members and close companions. Samsung Health addresses this collective responsibility through its Health Data Sharing function. With user consent, individuals can share agreed-upon items—such as step counts, heart rate readings, blood pressure, and medication adherence—with trusted friends or family.
This functionality allows users to monitor whether aging parents living far away have completed their daily walks or taken prescribed medications on time. By combining advanced wearable hardware, intelligent software scoring, and connected sharing tools, Samsung aims to offer a comprehensive approach to everyday heart health management.
