Exploring the New iPhone 18 Pro

The iPhone 18 Pro is finally here, offering users plenty of new elements to test once unboxed. While it might not seem as exciting as the new iPhone Duo, Apple has packed several meaningful upgrades into its latest flagship device, ranging from a redesigned camera system to faster charging.

Early testers and new owners can immediately put the hardware through its paces by examining the updated display housing. Apple has ensured that the Dynamic Island is smaller, leaving more visible screen space for your content when it remains inactive.

Advanced Camera With Variable Aperture

Photography enthusiasts will find significant changes within the Camera app. The 48-megapixel main camera is the first on an iPhone to feature variable aperture, utilizing six physical blades that open and close similarly to a DSLR camera lens.

Users are provided with four distinct settings in the Camera app: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. Selecting f/1.48 allows more light into the sensor and creates a blurred background suitable for dimly lit restaurants. Conversely, switching to f/4 reduces the aperture for sharper group photos and landscapes, while introducing a starburst effect on bright light sources. These aperture controls work specifically on the main lens during 1x and 2x shooting modes, accessible by tapping the six-dot button.

Expanded Manual Controls and Customization

Beyond aperture adjustments, Apple has integrated additional manual camera controls typically restricted to third-party applications. Users can manually adjust shutter speed, focus, and white balance directly from the default interface.

All manual tools are housed inside the same six-dot button menu. Furthermore, the Camera app can be customized by pressing and holding the controls at the top of the screen to drag preferred settings into permanent view for quicker access.

New Grain and Texture Editing Options

Photographic Styles have evolved since their introduction with the iPhone 13, giving users selective control over contrast, shadows, and colors without relying on basic filters. The iPhone 18 Pro introduces two specific new controls: grain and texture.

By opening the editing menu, tapping Styles, and selecting Customize under the Texture tab, photographers can soften skin tones, add a glow, apply a film effect to highlights, or incorporate a classic grainy look into their images.

Multitasking With a Smaller Dynamic Island

The interactive cutout known as the Dynamic Island has received functional enhancements alongside its physical reduction in size. It is now capable of displaying up to three Live Activities concurrently.

This capability allows users to monitor media playback controls, track a timer's progress, and follow sports scores all at the same time. Pressing and holding individual Live Activities continues to expand them as seen on previous models.

Accelerated Charging Capabilities

Battery replenishment has also been optimized to help users recover power quickly. The device can charge from 0 to 50 percent in approximately 15 minutes, or take around 30 minutes if you're using a MagSafe charger.

To achieve maximum wired charging speeds, a USB PD 3.1 adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply operating at 60W or higher is required. Apple tested these speeds using its own 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which peaks at 60W. Charging speeds naturally decrease past the halfway mark to preserve long-term battery health.
