Mercedes-AMG Reveals 1,150hp Electric GT SUV

Mercedes-AMG has taken the wraps off the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, marking the first time in the performance brand's 59-year history that it has developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house from the ground up.

Mercedes-AMG Reveals 1,150hp Electric GT SUV

An In-House Performance Beast

Earlier this year, the automotive world was introduced to the GT four-door coupe, a high-powered sports sedan equipped with three axial flux motors. Mercedes-AMG is now expanding that high-performance electric lineage with its beefier cousin: the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. This release marks a significant milestone in the brand's 59-year history, representing the first time the performance division has developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house from the ground up.

Scheduled to arrive in the United States next summer, the new electric vehicle utilizes Mercedes' specialized AMG.EA architecture. The engineering approach is designed to blend traditional sports-car handling with the suburban practicality of a full-size SUV. When it hits the market, it will compete directly in the luxury electric vehicle segment, potentially outpacing competitors like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric and Lucid Gravity.

Trims, Power, and Weight Specifications

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be offered in three distinct trims: the GT 53, the GT 55, and the flagship GT 63 model. At the top of the lineup, the GT 63 delivers a staggering 1,153 horsepower using the same three axial flux motors found in its sedan counterpart. This immense output surpasses the power figures offered by the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control.

Despite its substantial size and power output, the vehicle's weight remains comparable to other high-end luxury electric SUVs. The flagship AMG GT 63 SUV weighs in at 5,941 pounds, positioning it slightly lighter than competing models like the Lotus Eletre R at 6,007 pounds and the Lucid Gravity at 6,100 pounds, while landing nearly identical to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric at 5,960 pounds.

Blistering Charging Speeds and Battery Tech

Underpinning the SUV's electric powertrain is an 800-volt architecture that enables ultra-fast charging speeds. The system supports up to 710kW on the 128kWh battery featured in the GT 63 and GT 55 trims, and up to 600kW on the 106kWh battery used in the GT 53. Drivers can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 12 minutes, or recover up to 450km (roughly 280 miles) of WLTP range in 10 minutes. The larger 128kWh battery variants are projected to deliver an estimated maximum range of 435 miles.

The battery itself incorporates Formula 1-inspired technology, utilizing specialized NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes, and cylindrical cells. To maintain optimal thermal performance, an electrically nonconductive oil flows directly around individual cells. This uniform thermal management is designed to ensure continuous high-power delivery and long-term battery durability, giving Mercedes a technical edge over rival charging standards.

Active Suspension and Track Dynamics

To ensure the full-size SUV handles like a much smaller vehicle, Mercedes-AMG outfitted the model with advanced suspension engineering. Traditional mechanical roll bars have been replaced by a newly developed suspension system utilizing active hydraulic elements. This setup works to eliminate pitch and roll during heavy braking, acceleration, and tight cornering maneuvers.

The active suspension is paired with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-axle steering. Together, these mechanical and electronic systems aim to strike a balance between track precision and long-distance driving comfort. Additionally, the vehicle features the Predictive Performance Manager, an AI-driven tool that uses track-mapping data to dynamically regulate motor output based on topography, conserving battery energy during downhill sections and ensuring full power on ascents.

Artificial Intelligence and Simulated Sound Profiles

Inside the cabin, the SUV runs on the MB.OS platform displayed across a 14-inch screen. The interface integrates multiple AI agents from major technology companies, allowing occupants to use voice commands for navigation, web searches, and general inquiries. Meanwhile, Mercedes' onboard AI system manages physical vehicle controls, including climate settings, drive modes, and interior lighting.

To preserve the emotional characteristics of a performance vehicle, the engineering team opted against purely synthetic EV noises. Instead, the SUV pipes in recorded audio profiles of legendary AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines. The experience is enhanced by simulated mechanical gear shifts via paddle controls, adjustable sound profiles, and integrated physical seat vibrations standard across all trims under the AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program. Official pricing details have not yet been announced by Mercedes-AMG.
