Clever Apps Highlight Apple’s iPhone Duo Potential
Developers are utilizing Apple's first foldable device to build creative applications tailored for dual screens.

The Rise of Apple's Foldable
For years, updates to Apple's flagship smartphone meant incremental changes, such as a slightly thinner profile, faster processing speeds, or minor hardware adjustments. That dynamic shifted when Apple decided to enter the market for foldable phones with the introduction of the iPhone Duo, which starts at $2,000.
While initial reviews pointed out that many mainstream applications are still catching up to the new form factor—often appearing with black bars or requiring manual enlargement—the software development community has begun embracing the hardware with creative, Duo-optimized experiences.
Streaming and Media Integration
Among the hand-picked partners for the hardware launch, Netflix updated its streaming service to utilize the device's dual screen sizes. Users can browse short-form clips on the outer display while the device is folded, and then open the unit to continue watching media on the larger inner matte screen.
In addition to Netflix, Apple's official launch partners included apps such as MLB, NYT Cooking, Slack, and the calendar app Fantastical.
Retro Tech and Nostalgia
Independent developers have also built novel experiences tailored specifically for a hinged device. A music player initially known as Duo-Man and later renamed Deck-Man was designed to imitate the functionality of a retro portable cassette player.
The app allows users to browse digital albums as cassettes, load them into a virtual player, and operate playback using authentic-sounding hardware controls. This software taps into a broader cultural demand for retro tech as a counterpoint to fast-paced modern products.
Virtual Notebooks and Interactive Tools
Other creations focus on physical emulation, such as the TypeDraw app designed by Phil Traut. Operating as a personal notebook complete with an elastic closure band animation, it lets users type in customized handwriting fonts or choose from a dozen pre-designed options.
Users can select different paper backgrounds like grid, lined, or dotted pages, and combine handwritten text with colorful drawings to mimic a traditional paper journal.
Adaptive Movement and Fitness
Fitness applications have also adapted to the new hardware configurations. Wakeout, a mini-workout app, features distinct user interfaces depending on the physical position of the device.
Whether the hardware is completely closed, opened flat like a book, propped in tent mode, or resting like a laptop computer, the app adjusts its layout and movement games to match the display orientation.
