End of OS Updates for Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro

Meta is officially bringing support for its widely recognized virtual reality hardware to a close. According to an official Meta developers blog post, the Meta Quest 2 and the Meta Quest Pro will no longer receive operating system updates after March 2027.

The Meta Quest 2 has maintained a substantial market presence for six years, establishing itself as a prominent option in the consumer virtual reality space. Meanwhile, the Meta Quest Pro, which shares the same underlying chipset, will also see its operating system updates cease at the same time alongside OS v213. Despite the cessation of new feature development, Meta plans to continue delivering security updates for both headsets through the end of 2027.

Software Support and Multiplayer Functionality

With the upcoming transition in software development, users often wonder how existing applications and multiplayer services will be affected. Meta has clarified that it will not be actively removing cross-play multiplayer functionality or blocking access for Quest 2 players.

Consequently, games supporting the hardware will continue to function after the cutoff dates, provided they do not rely on new operating system features introduced after March 2027. Developers are also required to give players a six-month notice if support is officially ending for a specific game, ensuring that users have adequate time to plan their transition.

Historical Context and Hardware Legacy

The Meta Quest 2 stands out as a major milestone for the company, securing its place as the best-selling virtual reality headset of all time with approximately 20 million units sold throughout its commercial lifetime.

This longevity means the Meta Quest 2 will achieve just over seven years of total security updates. In contrast, the Meta Quest Pro will reach the end of its feature update cycle after a shorter span, having originally launched in October 2022. While owners can still play games during this transition period, native game support is expected to decline rapidly following January 2028.

Transitioning to Newer Hardware Solutions

As Meta phases out support for older architectures, the company continues to pivot toward its newer ecosystem of virtual reality devices. Consumers looking to upgrade have multiple options available in the current hardware lineup, including the $599 Meta Quest 3 and the $349 Meta Quest 3S, which were introduced to the market in recent years.

Furthermore, upcoming hardware developments point toward advanced form factors. The anticipated Meta VR Glasses are projected to feature next-generation chipsets, higher-resolution AMOLED displays, and substantially lighter and smaller physical dimensions compared to existing Quest 3 models.

Future Outlook for OS Development

The shift in development resources highlights the rapid pace of technological advancement in the virtual reality industry. Because the Meta Quest 2 relies on a mobile chip that is now considered significantly outdated, focusing engineering efforts on modern and more capable hardware is a logical step for Meta.

With new hardware releases expected early next year, the company will usher in a fresh era of operating system development. This transition will allow software engineers to leverage advanced processing capabilities, leaving older devices behind as the platform moves forward into its next phase of innovation.
