Meta Launches Muse Gadgets Open-Source AI Hardware Project

Meta is expanding its personal AI agent ecosystem by introducing open-source tools for developers and tinkerers to build custom hardware connected to Muse.

Introduction to Muse Gadgets

Meta’s personal AI agent, known as Muse, has already proven popular with the masses by shopping, filling out forms, and booking travel on behalf of users. Following this early traction, the company is targeting tinkerers and hackers with a brand new side project designed to bridge artificial intelligence with physical hardware.

On Friday, the tech giant officially introduced Muse Gadgets, an open-source initiative that allows developers to build their own hardware capable of connecting directly to the Muse ecosystem. The initiative arrives as part of a broader strategy by Meta to expand its AI presence beyond standard software interactions.

Open-Source Firmware and Development Tools

To help jumpstart development, Meta is supplying open-source firmware—the low-level software that operates a device—alongside a Linux software development kit (SDK). Furthermore, the company has outlined a series of initial project ideas to help users get started right away.

Among the suggested concepts are loading Muse onto a stick that plugs directly into a television's HDMI port or integrating the AI agent with a color e-ink display. The flexible framework places very few limits on creators, welcoming experimentation across various hardware designs.

Hardware Flexibility and Raspberry Pi Support

Developers and hobbyists are not restricted to proprietary hardware configurations. Users can easily set up low-cost hobbyist computers like a Raspberry Pi or deploy off-the-shelf ESP32 boards for their projects.

Meta notes that creators can connect Muse to displays, buttons, sensors, actuators, and whatever else they might have lying around on their workbench. To facilitate community collaboration and troubleshooting, Meta has also established a dedicated Discord channel to support users.

The Muse Home Link Prototype

Naturally, Meta has already tested the open-source code with its own internal hardware builds. According to Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, detailed in a post on X, the company successfully constructed a specialized gadget named Muse Home Link.

The USB-C-powered device allows Muse to connect seamlessly to a home network, enabling direct communication with smart home devices including smart speakers and smart TVs. Meta manufactured 5,000 units of the Home Link device and chose to distribute them for free to Muse subscribers while supplies last.

Expanding Beyond Standalone Chatbots

Although the open-source hardware initiative may not possess massive consumer appeal out of the gate, it aligns neatly with Meta's aggressive strategy to turn Muse into much more than a standard standalone chatbot.

Meta is actively pushing its AI agent across multiple commercial fronts. Earlier in the week, the company introduced Muse for Small Business, and it has established a dedicated business unit called Meta Enterprise Platform to target corporate customers.
