Simplifying the Domain Search Experience

For years, shopping for a new domain name often meant navigating cluttered checkout pages riddled with unnecessary add-ons and confusing upsells. Cloudflare Registrar, which was originally launched a decade ago, aimed to combat this by offering domains at cost with transparent pricing. However, the company realized that simplicity should not be limited to the checkout screen; it needs to begin the exact moment a user starts looking for an idea.

Previously, the registrar's search interface displayed a limited set of roughly 20 results from a restricted subset of extensions, occasionally modifying user queries to suggest alternative options. The redesigned search engine takes a much more comprehensive and straightforward approach by displaying the exact search term across every single supported extension. Results load dynamically as users type and scroll, providing a complete picture that includes both available options and already registered domains.

Architecture and Progressive Probing

Supporting over 420 extensions means a single user query can trigger hundreds of independent availability questions. Because querying every single registry simultaneously would be slow, wasteful, and restricted by upstream rate limits, Cloudflare engineered a sophisticated multi-source evidence-gathering system. The platform progressively probes prepared availability datasets, DNS answers, and live registry lookups to balance speed, freshness, and certainty.

The entire search infrastructure is built on Cloudflare's core developer platform primitives. Workers handle public search entry points and evidence-gathering tasks, while Durable Objects coordinate individual search sessions without waiting on network delays. Furthermore, Workers KV stores pre-parsed zone files and bulk datasets, and WebSockets maintain a bidirectional connection to deliver real-time delta updates directly to the browser.

Empowering AI Agents and Developers

Beyond human users browsing via web interfaces, Cloudflare has designed its registrar services to work naturally with AI agents. By integrating with the Model Context Protocol, developers can grant agents direct access to registrar functions without building custom integrations. Following the launch of the Registrar API beta earlier in the year, the platform has expanded to include a dedicated sandbox environment where developers and agents can safely test registration workflows without triggering real financial transactions.

The expanded API suite also features a comprehensive extensions endpoint that returns specific requirements for all 420+ supported top-level domains. Additionally, Cloudflare has introduced programmatic domain transfers, allowing users to move domains from external providers into Cloudflare using automated scripts or interactive terminal commands.

Terminal Integration via the New CLI

To bridge the gap between automated workflows and developer environments, Cloudflare recently announced the launch of the cf CLI. This terminal-based tool brings full registrar capabilities straight to the command line, enabling users to prompt their preferred AI agents to search for, register, or transfer domains entirely through natural conversation and terminal prompts.
