Microsoft Unveils New Data Innovations for AI and Fabric
At the European Microsoft Fabric + SQL Community Conference, Microsoft has announced a sweeping set of data innovations designed to help organizations integrate their unique business intelligence and data estates directly into their AI strategies.

Unlocking Unique Business Intelligence
Every organization holds knowledge that is uniquely its own, encompassing the way its business operates, historical data, employee expertise, and the context behind daily decisions. As powerful artificial intelligence models become increasingly widespread, the differentiator for enterprises will be how effectively they can combine those models with their proprietary data and business context.
To achieve a lasting advantage, Microsoft outlines three essential elements that must work together: human ambition to set direction, intelligence grounded in organizational knowledge, and trust to scale safely. Announced at the European Microsoft Fabric + SQL Community Conference, these new updates across Microsoft Fabric and Azure Databases aim to place an organization's data estate squarely at the heart of its AI strategy.
Fabric IQ Integrates Context Into Copilot
As Microsoft Copilot evolves across home, code, and autopilot experiences, reliable access to trusted business context is critical. Fabric IQ introduces governed business context directly into Copilot, grounding experiences in trusted Power BI semantic models, metrics, relationships, and established business definitions.
With Fabric IQ now generally available in Microsoft Copilot Chat and Cowork, users can pose business questions and receive answers derived directly from governed Power BI data. Furthermore, Copilot Cowork can utilize these insights to support broader multistep tasks, while integration with the new Code experience is rolling out through the Frontier program.
This functionality helps eliminate confusion regarding metrics, such as sales forecasts, by ensuring that answers rely on the exact same semantic model that drives official corporate reports, all while preserving existing access controls and governance.
Expanding Collaboration and System Observability
Because business knowledge frequently extends beyond the immediate boundaries of a single team or business unit, Microsoft has introduced IQ Sharing in Fabric. Currently available in preview, IQ Sharing enables organizations to securely share data and its underlying business context with customers, partners, and broader ecosystems while maintaining strict governance over the primary assets.
Additionally, as enterprises scale their workloads on unified data platforms, maintaining visibility into system health is paramount. Observability in Microsoft Fabric transitions teams from reactive troubleshooting to proactive operations through cross-workspace monitoring, an enhanced Monitor Hub, and Operations Agents that help investigate issues and automate responses.
Agentic Data Engineering and Application Development
Building upon its previously stated vision, Microsoft is bringing agentic data engineering to Fabric. This capability introduces autonomous execution to complex data engineering initiatives, allowing engineers to define desired outcomes and boundaries while autonomous agents plan, execute, validate, and refine the underlying data preparation tasks.
Alongside data engineering advancements, Fabric Apps allows developers to build and scale AI-powered business applications directly on top of governed data in Microsoft Fabric, streamlining the path from prototype to production with enhanced data connectivity, transactional workloads, and policy-controlled access.
Local Flexibility with SQL Server on Azure Local
To support scenarios where organizations require strict control over the physical execution environment of their critical data and workloads, Microsoft announced that SQL Server on Azure Local is now generally available. This brings powerful database and Azure services directly into local operational environments.
Furthermore, SQL Server on Azure Local with disconnected operations is currently in preview, extending this operational flexibility to environments where cloud connectivity might be restricted, intermittent, or entirely unavailable.
