Microsoft 365 Family to Finally Share AI Benefits
Microsoft is updating its Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscription plans to allow users to share AI features, though cloud storage limits are also seeing significant adjustments.

Sharing Copilot and AI Benefits
Microsoft is introducing major changes to its subscription plans, enabling Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers to share Copilot and AI usage features with up to five other people on a plan. Although Microsoft bundled its AI-powered Office features into Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions last year, the initial rollout restricted AI access exclusively to the primary account holder. Under the upcoming updates outlined in emails sent to subscribers, plans will now support shared AI benefits alongside access to Office apps and OneDrive storage.
In addition to broadening access, the updates allow account holders to manage AI access for younger family members. The changes follow the rollout that occurred after Microsoft 365 Premium launched, which previously combined Copilot Pro benefits and a Microsoft 365 Family subscription for a monthly fee of $19.99.
Flexible AI Usage and Limits
Alongside shared access, Microsoft is adjusting how AI usage is measured. Individual AI feature limits are shifting into a single, unified AI usage allowance. Subscribers will be able to apply this allowance across the advanced AI features they use most frequently.
The platform will also give users the ability to purchase additional AI usage when they require more than their standard allowance provides. Depending on how individual subscribers utilize Copilot, this flexible structure could potentially result in higher overall costs for heavy AI users.
Changes to Cloud Storage Allocations
While the introduction of shared AI features represents a major upgrade for family plans, the updates also introduce a substantial shift in cloud storage policies. The previous model provided 1TB of OneDrive storage per person. Moving forward, Microsoft is cutting this down to a shared 2TB pool distributed across all family members.
Microsoft defends the change by arguing that a shared pool offers greater flexibility if a single family member exceeds the traditional 1TB threshold, while allowing everyone on the plan to utilize the available space while keeping their individual files and accounts private.
Rollout Timeline and Transitional Support
The transition regarding cloud storage will not take effect immediately for current users. According to the company's notification details, the new storage limitations will apply following a subscriber's first renewal after May 2nd, 2027.
For existing subscribers located in eligible markets, a support note indicates that users might also qualify for transitional bonus storage. Furthermore, the company states it plans to provide specialized support to families that rely heavily on large amounts of storage space.
