A Unified Starting Point

Microsoft is reimagining Copilot to support evolving work patterns by connecting familiar tools with new AI capabilities. The company states that the goal is to expand what individuals and organizations can accomplish. The new Copilot app introduces Home as a central hub where Chat and Cowork converge. This design allows users to review recent activity, receive suggestions, and resume tasks seamlessly. Chat handles instant conversational queries, while Cowork manages delegated end-to-end tasks such as creating RFP responses or financial packages.

Office Integration Enhancements

A significant update involves bringing the full power of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly into Copilot through Office in Copilot. This integration eliminates the need to switch between applications for drafting or editing. Users can ask Copilot to create launch briefs, model budgets, or build presentations that remain live and editable for the entire team. The system maintains synchronization between Copilot and the native Office apps, ensuring that formatting and context are preserved. Additionally, PowerPoint now automatically keeps decks on-brand, while Excel provides transparency into changes made by Copilot or collaborators.

Democratizing Solution Building

The new Code feature extends solution-building beyond professional developers. It allows anyone to create small, purpose-built solutions such as trackers, dashboards, or automations using natural language descriptions. Powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, Code operates in a sandboxed environment that can be hosted securely within the user's tenant. This approach ensures that generated applications are grounded in the specific context of the user's work. Microsoft notes that learning to build these solutions is becoming a basic skill comparable to writing memos or modeling budgets.

Secure Runtime Infrastructure

To support the increased ease of building in Copilot, Microsoft is introducing the Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime. This hosting infrastructure allows code to run safely within the company's Microsoft 365 environment. It is governed by IT departments but designed to be accessible to all employees. The runtime enables the sharing of apps with teammates and connection to live data. This foundation also supports applications built in Cowork and Copilot Studio, and it is opening up to third-party and pro-code developers. The service is currently in preview and will be accessible inside Code.

Autopilot as a Digital Teammate

Autopilot, previously known as Scout, functions as a persistent and proactive digital teammate. Users can assign it a name, role, and goal, after which it operates independently. It monitors channels, follows up on threads, and handles recurring work without waiting for prompts. For example, it can manage a full supplier review process, including scheduling, meeting prep, and stakeholder follow-ups. Because Autopilot is cloud-hosted, it continues to work even when the user is offline. It integrates with Teams, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps, allowing users to @mention it like a colleague while maintaining strict permissions and audit trails.

Enterprise Intelligence and Rollout

Copilot is grounded in Microsoft IQ, a unified intelligence platform that connects business operations with organizational knowledge. This provides a real-time, governed view for Copilot and agents. Microsoft is also expanding business context by integrating Fabric IQ, which brings trusted data from Power BI semantic models into Copilot. Home and Code will begin rolling out in the Frontier program in the coming weeks, while Autopilot is expanding to private preview at the end of the month. The company is also introducing FinOps for AI capabilities to help manage spend and optimize value from Copilot and agents.
