Software Updates for Older Nest Models

Google is rolling out software updates to several Nest Cam and Doorbell models, continuing support for six of its older smart home devices. According to a report by 9to5Google, the company is pushing out these firmware refinements to ensure older hardware continues to function smoothly within its ecosystem.

For these updates to install, users must have already migrated their older Nest devices to the Google Home app. Google notes that this transition process has been widely available to all users and Nest devices for months, if not years.

As part of its documentation, Google also officially refers to the Nest Hello—its original doorbell camera—as the "Nest Doorbell (wired, 1st gen)." This nomenclature aligns with the broader hardware naming conventions used across the Google Nest product lineup.

Improving Wi-Fi Reconnection Stability

Among the primary improvements included in the new software package is enhanced Wi-Fi reconnection stability. Google has implemented fixes for issues that could previously cause cameras to crash or stall when attempting to reconnect following brief Wi-Fi interruptions.

Maintaining a stable connection is vital for continuous security monitoring, and these patches aim to reduce unexpected downtime for users experiencing intermittent home network drops.

Faster Night Vision Switching

The latest updates also address performance bottlenecks related to low-light transitions. Specifically, Google resolved an issue affecting the Nest Cam Indoor (1st gen) and Nest Cam Outdoor (1st gen).

Previously, turning on these cameras in low-light environments or manually switching to night vision within the Google Home app could take an inconvenient 15 to 20 seconds. The new patch significantly accelerates this process.

Audio-Video Sync and Status Light Fixes

Owners of the Nest Doorbell (wired, 1st gen) will benefit from a fix targeting audio and video synchronization. The update resolves an issue that could cause audio and video feeds to fall out of sync, which occasionally triggered unexpected device restarts.

Additionally, Google addressed status light behavior on the Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Nest Cam IQ Outdoor models. Previously, a disconnected Wi-Fi network on an already configured camera could cause the status light ring to pulse blue, incorrectly indicating that the device was waiting for setup.

Automatic Background Installation

Google has confirmed that these software updates are rolling out now and will install automatically in the background without requiring manual intervention from users.

Further details regarding the software releases and affected hardware can be found directly through official Google Home support release notes.
