An "AI-First" Shift for Unreal Engine Maker

Epic Games is shifting to an "AI-first" development strategy for its partnership with the Walt Disney Company, utilizing AI models to handle all code writing and guide artwork for an upcoming shooter. According to a Bloomberg report, unnamed sources familiar with the project detailed this significant internal pivot at the Unreal Engine creator.

Internal employee messages reviewed by Bloomberg outline that human developers will instead manage and direct code and art assets produced by models such as Anthropic’s Claude. The internal transition points away from hand-written code toward art assets generated using full artificial intelligence workflows.

Project Delay and Collaboration Background

The $1.5 billion partnership between Epic and Disney was announced in early 2024 with plans to deliver a Marvel- and Star Wars-themed shooter by March 2027. That project has now been delayed indefinitely amid the AI-driven shakeup, alongside slower-than-expected development progress and understaffed teams, according to the report.

An Epic spokesperson addressed the strategy shift in a statement, noting that the company is embracing AI-accelerated development driven by its creators.

Leadership Perspective on Artificial Intelligence

Following the news, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney wrote on social media about the company-wide organizational pivot. He stated that the goal is to retool teams for maximum AI acceleration so that employees can build more and better content while bringing those benefits to all teams utilizing Unreal Engine.

Sweeney has maintained a long-standing bullish stance on artificial intelligence transforming game production. In an interview with IGN earlier this year, he predicted that the technology would soon enable small teams to construct expansive interactive worlds featuring infinite dialogue with minimal setup.

Sweeney also commented last November that AI disclosure tags, such as those required by Valve’s Steam platform, are unnecessary because AI tooling will eventually be involved in nearly all future production processes.

Previous Context and Industry Adoption

The pivot arrives after a turbulent period for the company. Epic previously laid off over 1,000 employees following a downturn in Fortnite engagement. Representatives for the developer have previously emphasized that the overarching organizational focus is centered around boosting operational efficiency rather than eliminating jobs.

Industry-wide adoption of generative artificial intelligence remains mixed. Data from a survey of game industry professionals prior to the Game Developers Conference indicated that while roughly a third of surveyed professionals utilized generative AI tools, the vast majority relied on them primarily for brainstorming and research tasks rather than coding assistance or prototyping.
