Epic Games Reveals New Vibe-Coded Launcher Preview
Epic Games has launched a public Preview build of its redesigned Epic Games Launcher, proudly leaning on artificial intelligence and a technique it describes as "vibe coding" to improve performance and responsiveness.

A New App Built From Scratch
Nearly eight years after entering the game store space, Epic Games is taking a radically different approach to its desktop application. In its latest Epic Games Store blog post, the company announced a publicly available Preview build of a completely redesigned launcher, stating bluntly that "programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that's way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look."
While the phrasing may sound casual, Epic Games Store General Manager and VP Martin Keely explained that the team started entirely from scratch. According to Keely, the development team utilized artificial intelligence as a tool to write and review new features from the ground up on a different tech stack, aiming to replicate core functionality without copying legacy code.

Performance and Cross-Platform Support
The primary objective behind the rewrite was addressing the long-standing criticisms directed at the legacy launcher. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney previously admitted that the older version was clunky. By using AI to accelerate development, a smaller team was able to rewrite the codebase efficiently and launch it across multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac, and a newly added Linux version.
External testing and company claims highlight improvements in cold-start speeds and responsiveness compared to competitor software like Valve's Steam. The refreshed software also introduces long-requested additions such as a Recent Games list and a centralized downloads hub, alongside the ability to access games installed via Steam directly from the Epic interface.
Context of an AI-First Pivot
The release of the vibe-coded launcher preview coincides with a broader strategic shift at the company. Just prior to the release, Tim Sweeney outlined a major corporate pivot toward maximum AI acceleration. In a post on X, he noted that the strategy aims to enable teams to build more and better content while retooling developers around AI workflows.
This heightened focus on artificial intelligence follows a turbulent period for the workforce. Earlier in the year, the company carried out substantial workforce reductions, cutting 1,000 employees following an even larger round of layoffs in 2023. These organizational changes have placed intense scrutiny on how the company chooses to highlight its automation and AI-driven development milestones.

Feature Parity and Future Roadmap
Although the new software brings notable speed enhancements and cross-platform compatibility, the company acknowledges that the preview release carries limitations. Because it was rebuilt from the ground up, the application is currently light on features, missing certain legacy social tools and account management options that users expect.
Epic Games has warned testers that the preview build will contain bugs as they gather user feedback through built-in forms. Development teams are actively working toward achieving full feature parity between the legacy launcher and the new vibe-coded Preview application, though no final release date for the stable version has been established.
