A Vibe-Coded Launcher Update

Epic Games has officially announced a major refresh of its PC games launcher, releasing a preview build that the company proudly describes as "way faster" and more responsive than its predecessor. In an unconventional twist for software development, Epic stated in a blog post that the new application was created using artificial intelligence. Further details are available from The Verge in the original source material.

"Programming is hard," Epic wrote in its announcement. "So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look." Martin Keely, Epic's VP and GM of the Epic Games Store and Epic Online Services, explained in a briefing that the team started completely from scratch.

AI-Assisted Development and Architecture

According to leadership, the development team utilized AI to write and review new features and capabilities from the ground up on a completely different tech stack. Keely noted that artificial intelligence proved particularly useful for replicating core functionality from the existing application while migrating the codebase to a faster, lighter framework.

The release arrives shortly after corporate leadership highlighted a broader pivot toward artificial intelligence acceleration across projects. CEO Tim Sweeney announced that the company is retooling internal development workflows to maximize efficiency, while reports noted heavy utilization of AI tools for upcoming studio projects.

New Features and Linux Support

Beyond raw performance improvements, the updated application introduces long-requested features including a dedicated Recent Games list and a centralized downloads hub for tracking network activity. More notably, the architecture enables the launcher to run smoothly across multiple operating systems.

The public preview build is rolling out for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems starting today. Alongside the Linux release of the storefront app, Epic revealed plans to bring its flagship title Fortnite to the Linux operating system through the launcher infrastructure.

Current Limitations and Rollout Plans

Because the vibe-coded preview app is still early in its public lifecycle, it currently ships "light on features." Certain social tools and advanced account management options from the legacy version have not yet been migrated over. Epic has also warned early testers that the build will contain initial bugs.

The older version of the launcher will remain available to users during the preview phase. Epic has not established a rigid timeline for when users will be forced to migrate, stating that a full, permanent rollout will occur only when the updated application achieves stability and full feature parity with the legacy app.
