Keurig Unveils Alta System and Plastic-Free Pods
Keurig is moving beyond traditional single-serve options with the launch of its new Alta system, introducing compostable pods designed to ditch plastic and aluminum.

The Transition Beyond Plastic K-Cups
Keurig has officially debuted its new single-serve coffee maker designed to move away from conventional single-serve options. For nearly 30 years, consumers have relied on the disposable K-Cup format first launched in 1998, but the company is now preparing a major shift toward sustainable alternatives.
The new hardware platform arrives after years of development aimed at tackling environmental concerns tied to traditional single-serve packaging. While traditional options have faced criticism for environmental waste, the newly revealed hardware aims to redefine household brewing.
Introducing the AltaRounds Pod Design
The core of the new hardware platform is the AltaRound, a compostable, compressed coffee round enclosed in a plant-based seaweed wrap that keeps the grounds fresh and compressed. Unlike standard methods, the new format requires no manual measuring, grinding, tamping, or pressure adjustments from the user.
Once an AltaRound is inserted into the machine, a built-in scanner reads a QR code on the pod to determine the correct settings. The machine then punctures the round and applies 10 bars of pressure to extract the liquid, depositing spent rounds into an integrated container.
Hardware Features and Drink Variety
The first-generation hardware is described as sleek but notably large, taking up significantly more kitchen counter space than standard single-serve brewers and grinders. To accommodate different user preferences, the device features both the new extraction mechanism and a built-in legacy brewer.
Phil Drapeau, Keurig’s senior vice president of Future Coffee Systems, explained during a New York City presentation that customers wanted capabilities beyond basic brewed coffee, including sophisticated espresso drinks and lattes. At launch, the pods are available in single espresso, double espresso, and regular coffee varieties.
Pricing, Bundles, and Market Availability
Keurig is currently offering a limited US bundle comprising the brewer in four color choices, four boxes of pods, and Flur glasses for $500. While initial preorders quickly sold out, the company has not yet announced a firm release date or standalone pricing for widespread retail availability, though a pack of eight pods is expected to cost between $10 and $11.
Due to the high hardware cost and the gradual rollout of pod flavors from Keurig and sister brand Peet's, traditional formats will likely remain prominent in households and offices for some time as consumers evaluate the transition.
