Keurig Alta Review: New Tech and Coffee Pucks
Keurig introduces the Alta brewer, combining traditional K-Cup functionality with a brand-new technology called AltaRounds to deliver true espresso and textured milk.

Design and Setup
The [Keurig Alta](https://www.wired.com/story/keurig-alta-coffee-brewer/) arrives as a high-end departure from traditional models. Unlike inexpensive Keurigs that often feature plasticky builds, this multifaceted home coffee brewer incorporates sleek curved white lines, a metal cup holder, magnetic components, and slim reversible reservoirs.
The system features a streamlined setup process, allowing users to connect the machine to Wi-Fi and begin brewing in under seven minutes. However, the machine has a substantial physical footprint, measuring 10.8 inches wide, 11.8 inches high, and 19.0 inches deep, while weighing a heavy 22 pounds.
Dual-Compartment Brewing Technology
The top of the appliance features two distinct compartments. The right side houses a standard K-Cup basket with a piercing needle, while the left side introduces a dedicated compartment for [Keurig Alta](https://www.wired.com/story/keurig-alta-coffee-brewer/) compatibility utilizing brand-new coffee pucks.
Known as AltaRounds, these pucks are coated in a seaweed-derived substance that acts as a binding agent, allowing the coffee to bloom inside the machine. Each puck features a stamped QR code scanned instantly by the left touchscreen compartment, which then prompts the device to recommend specific beverage types.
AltaRounds are currently available in dark roast, medium roast, caramel blend, and double-shot espresso varieties, with light-roast and single-shot options planned for the future. Spent pucks are collected automatically in an internal waste bin and can be placed in home compost or standard trash.
Espresso Quality and Sustainability
In testing against alternative pod machines like the [Bruvi BV-01](https://www.wired.com/review/bruvi-bv-01/), the Alta utilizes up to 10 bars of pressure to pull authentic espresso rather than relying on concentrated coffee extracts. The resulting brews feature a distinct layer of crema and rich oiliness.
While traditional K-Cups have historically been viewed as wasteful within the coffee industry, the new AltaRounds offer a plastic-free delivery system. The pucks currently ship in foil-based packaging with plans to transition to curbside-recyclable paper-based wrapping.
Built-In Steam Wand and Milk Frothing
The machine includes a built-in steam wand complete with a magnetic whisk and a dedicated vessel. When users select milk-based beverages like lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites, cortados, or Americanos, the touchscreen guides them step by step through the process.
The system makes intelligent adjustments based on whether the user selects dairy, oat, almond, or soy milk. Users can also customize foam textures, including wet or dry foam, as well as cold foam and cold froth options.
Interface and Maintenance
Navigating the touchscreen interface allows users to customize drink size, temperature, and strength, and save favorites for quick access. While the hardware offers advanced functionality, minor maintenance challenges include a multi-piece waste bin design that separates grounds from residual water, requiring careful handling during disposal.
