Apple Updates 14-Inch MacBook Pro with M6 Silicon
Apple has officially introduced the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, powered by its latest M6 silicon chip. According to details shared by TechCrunch, the refreshed laptop delivers up to 24 hours of battery life and introduces support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity. The base model starts at $1,999 and comes in space black and silver finishes.
The laptop was officially announced via a press release ahead of the company's scheduled "Pro and Tell" event. Alongside the MacBook Pro, the tech giant also revealed a newly updated iMac utilizing the same M6 processor family, continuing a busy week of hardware announcements that also included a redesigned iPad mini.
Performance and Technical Specifications of the M6 Chip
Apple highlights that the M6 chip features a 12-core CPU incorporating what it describes as the world’s fastest CPU core, alongside a 12-core GPU. This architecture delivers more responsive performance, providing up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI workloads compared to the previous M5 generation.
Furthermore, the M6 processor is built as Apple's first 2nm chip, offering up to 13 times the LLM prompt-processing speed of the original M1 MacBook Pro. The system starts with 16GB of unified memory, configurable up to 32GB, and boasts memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s.
Connectivity, Ports, and Hardware Design
The 14-inch MacBook Pro retains its familiar physical design while incorporating new networking capabilities through Apple's N1 wireless chip. Users gain access to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity. Physical input and output options remain extensive, including three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, a headphone jack, and a MagSafe 3 charging port.
For power management, the laptop supports fast charging capabilities, enabling devices to reach up to a 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes when paired with a compatible high-wattage USB-C power adapter. The built-in camera retains a 12-megapixel resolution.
Refreshed iMac Lineup Joins the M6 Family
In addition to the portable lineup, Apple updated its all-in-one desktop computer with the M6 chip. The updated desktop arrives with a faster CPU and GPU configuration, featuring Neural Accelerators embedded into every core to support everyday productivity, photo editing, and video production.
The new iMac starts at $1,499 and is available in a vibrant array of colors, including blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange, and silver. Apple reports that the new desktop delivers up to five times faster on-device AI performance compared to the preceding M4 model.
Pricing, Configurations, and Availability
Both the newly announced MacBook Pro and iMac models will be available for preorder starting on October 28. Official retail availability and shipping are scheduled to begin on November 6. Prospective buyers can explore various memory and storage configurations directly through Apple's retail channels.
