Bringing PlayStation 2 Discs to Modern Hardware

A homebrew modder known as Sword has released a new tool named PS5SX2 for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, allowing gamers to use physical discs from older PlayStation 2 titles. The software functions as a native port of PCSX2, a popular PC-based PlayStation 2 emulator. Rather than streaming from a host system, the console handles the recompiling and rendering directly on its custom Zen 2 processor.

To achieve Vulkan-based rendering on a system that lacks a standard operating system with official Vulkan driver support, the project utilizes a modified version of ps5vk. Developed by coder Mihawk-99, this translation layer enables the necessary compatibility for emulation software on the hardware.

Disc Compatibility and Hardware Limitations

The PS5SX2 software accommodates standard digital image formats used in emulation, such as ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO. More notably, it provides direct support for physical PlayStation 2 game discs through either the console's internal optical drive or an external USB optical drive, accommodating discs from all geographical regions.

However, a physical hardware limitation restricts the software from reading standard compact discs. Because the optical drive on the Sony console lacks the specific laser required to read CDs, the emulator is limited exclusively to games released on DVDs.

Upscaling and Advanced Features

In addition to physical media support, PS5SX2 introduces several enhancements to improve the retro gaming experience on modern displays. The software features high-resolution upscaling that achieves up to 6X scaling over native resolutions, reaching 4K quality. It also integrates post-processing filters, including AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), alongside compatibility with PCSX2 patch files (.pnach) for widescreen and 60 FPS adjustments.

Additional capabilities built into the software include remote settings adjustment via a smartphone or tablet, online multiplayer via emulated network adapters routing to community servers, keyboard and mouse support, four-player couch co-op, and virtual memory cards up to 64MB per game.

Future Support for PlayStation 3 Discs

The development of the PS5SX2 project appears to be only an initial step for the homebrew creator. When questioned regarding the potential addition of PlayStation 3 disc support via an ongoing RPCS3 port development, Sword confirmed that the feature is currently in progress, responding affirmatively that it is coming alongside the project.
