TikTok’s Evolution Into a Super App

TikTok is steadily expanding its offerings beyond social media, moving closer to a super app model through local discovery guides, payment features, and e-commerce.

TikTok’s Evolution Into a Super App

The Road to a Super App

TikTok announced that it is adding an in-app restaurant guide, marking another step in the platform's ongoing expansion beyond traditional social media. The company transitioned to new, primarily U.S. ownership back in January and has steadily added features like TikTok Shop, local discovery maps, games, and robust search tools to its ecosystem.

The platform's strategy mirrors the super app model popularized in China by platforms like WeChat. While the viability of the super app model outside of China remains a question, TikTok continues to test the waters by attempting to become the single destination where users handle a wide variety of digital tasks.

Local Discovery and 'Must Eat'

Building on its popularity as a destination for viral restaurant recommendations, TikTok launched a community-driven guide called Must Eat. The feature draws on more than 40 million posts and comments to curate restaurant lists, letting users browse locations by city, cuisine, price, rating, and location.

By integrating detailed place pages with opening hours, star ratings, and price ranges directly into the interface, TikTok increasingly eliminates the need for users to turn to external engines like Google Search or Yelp for local recommendations.

Expanding Financial Services and Payments

Beyond discovery, TikTok is exploring deeper integration into financial services. Bloomberg reported that the platform has been spotted developing a feature allowing users to send money over direct messages, which would utilize the TikTok Pay infrastructure already active in Southeast Asia.

Additionally, Reuters reported that TikTok applied for approval to operate as a fintech company offering lending and payment services in Brazil. These moves indicate an ambition to branch out into a broader digital ecosystem that can compete with established fintech platforms.

E-Commerce Growth and TikTok Shop

One of the most notable expansions beyond social media has been the rollout of TikTok Shop. Following its initial U.S. launch in 2023, the marketplace has scaled rapidly, growing its U.S. sales substantially through 2024 and 2025.

The e-commerce arm has since expanded into luxury retail and introduced gift cards, allowing TikTok to capture a significant percentage of total social commerce in the United States and directly rival online marketplaces like Amazon and Shein.

Travel Booking and Sports Integration

TikTok has also moved into travel with TikTok GO, allowing users in the United States to discover and book hotels and attractions directly within the app. Rather than directing users to third-party web pages, the platform positions itself to handle the entire journey from discovery to reservation.

In sports, the company has incorporated dedicated hubs for major cultural events like the FIFA World Cup, supported by partnerships with sports leagues such as Major League Soccer (MLS) to keep users engaged without leaving the application environment.
