SpaceX Eyes 80,000 Cell Sites in Major Mobile Carrier Push
The Elon Musk-owned aerospace company is reportedly in discussions with Crown Castle Inc. to secure cell tower access as part of its broader wireless network strategy.

Targeting Major US Carriers
SpaceX is planning to access at least 80,000 cell sites as part of efforts to compete directly with Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T, according to a report from Bloomberg. The Elon Musk-owned company is looking to secure a major foothold in the domestic telecommunications market.
The company's strategy involves pairing a terrestrial network of cell towers with its growing constellation of direct-to-cell satellites. This multi-layered approach forms the backbone of SpaceX’s ambitious, pricey gamble to replace AT&T and Verizon as primary mobile service providers.
Talks With Crown Castle Inc.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that SpaceX is in talks with Crown Castle Inc., one of the nation's largest cell tower owners. This potential partnership was highlighted in recent industry coverage, such as a report from The Verge detailing the mobile carrier push.
The move would give SpaceX access to roughly half of the 158,500 cell towers currently operational across the United States, according to Reuters. By securing access to these towers, the company can significantly bolster its ground infrastructure capabilities.
Tower Owner Responses
When asked about a potential partnership with SpaceX, Amazon, or other satellite services during an earnings call on Wednesday, Crown Castle CEO Chris Hillabrant addressed market speculation regarding infrastructure sharing.
Hillabrant stated during the call, “I don’t think I want to get into customer-specific detail, but you can assume that we’re talking to all parties.” While declining to confirm specific agreements, the remarks underscore ongoing discussions between major infrastructure providers and satellite operators.
Broadening Spectrum and Regulatory Approvals
The latest infrastructure talks follow a series of strategic moves by the aerospace corporation to build out its telecommunications footprint. Earlier this month, SpaceX acquired a portfolio of low-band spectrum licenses to support its wireless ambitions.
In addition to those low-band acquisitions, the company also acquired 2GHz spectrum from EchoStar for $17 billion last year. These spectrum assets, combined with cell tower access and satellite deployments, are designed to facilitate nationwide connectivity.
Path Forward for Starlink Mobile
SpaceX continues to lay the groundwork for Starlink Mobile, aiming to establish itself as a dominant player in the United States mobile market. The integration of terrestrial cell sites with orbital assets represents a unique hybrid model for wireless telecommunications.
As negotiations continue with tower owners like Crown Castle, industry observers will be watching closely to see how quickly SpaceX can operationalize its terrestrial infrastructure and challenge the entrenched traditional carriers.
