What Features Are Lost Using AirPods With Galaxy Phones

While Apple AirPods can pair with non-Apple devices like Samsung Galaxy phones via Bluetooth, users miss out on a wide range of smart capabilities.

Connectivity and Setup on Android

When opening an AirPods case next to an iPhone, a quick setup card pops up automatically. However, doing the same next to a Samsung Galaxy yields no automated prompt. Instead, users must manually pair the earbuds by using the case button or front tapping depending on the model, then connecting through standard Bluetooth settings as reported by Engadget.

Basic playback functionality remains intact when connected to a non-Apple device. Pressing the stem allows users to play, pause, and skip tracks, and noise cancellation performance on models like the AirPods Pro 2 generally matches iOS behavior according to testing cited by SoundGuys.

Advanced Audio and Health Features Left Behind

A multitude of advanced functions remain restricted to Apple's ecosystem. Automatic device switching, ear detection, Spatial Audio head tracking, the Ear Tip Fit Test, Live Translation, hearing health tools, and the heart rate sensor on the AirPods Pro 3 all require an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Settings like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Volume also rely entirely on Apple hardware.

For comparison, buyers paying $249 for AirPods Pro 3 can purchase alternatives like Samsung's Galaxy Buds 4 Pro at the exact same price point. Samsung notes that its own earbuds reach their full potential when paired with a Galaxy phone, offering features such as Auto Switch, 360 Audio, and high-resolution audio codecs.

Firmware Updates and Tracking Limitations

Updating AirPods firmware presents a distinct hurdle for Android users. Apple states that updates occur automatically while AirPods charge and remain within Bluetooth range of a connected Apple device running Wi-Fi. Without an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, Apple's official solution requires booking an appointment at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Unlike Apple's official Android app for Beats headphones, no dedicated AirPods equivalent exists on the Google Play Store.

Locating lost earbuds through Find My also involves restrictions. While tracking is accessible via browser, the device must first be paired with an Apple Account. Furthermore, the web platform only shows locations and plays sounds without the ability to trigger audio from the charging case itself.

Recovering Functionality via Third-Party Apps

Android users can partially bridge the feature gap by downloading third-party utilities. Tools like CAPod allow users to view battery pop-ups and enable basic automatic play and pause actions.

Other applications, such as LibrePods, provide deeper integration by unlocking noise control modes, Conversation Awareness, head gestures, and long-press customization. However, using AirPods on an Android device fundamentally limits them to standard Bluetooth earbuds compared to their full ecosystem potential.
