Series B Funding and Backing

Tutor Intelligence Inc. announced that it has raised $75 million in Series B funding as it works toward general-purpose robotics. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, bringing the company's total capital raised to $117 million. Union Square Ventures and Neo, which led the startup's Series A and seed rounds respectively, also participated in the latest financing.

The company spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 2021. Based in Watertown, Mass., Tutor Intelligence asserts that it is building a full technology stack to close the gap between what robots can do and what people can do.

Technology Approach and Real-World Data

According to the company, real-world data, human tutors, and simulation are all part of the recipe for training AI models to enable next-generation robots to tackle a widening variety of tasks. While artificial intelligence has transformed the digital world by learning from vast records of text and images, the physical world has no such record to train on. To address this, Tutor has deployed fleets of internet-connected robots into production environments where they perform real work with input from remote operators.

The company utilizes this real-world data to train better frontier models, ultimately making the robots more capable. Tutor opened a Data Factory earlier this year to evaluate policies across 100 physical robots.

Sonny and Cassie Robot Deployments

Tutor's Data Factory includes the Sonny two-armed, semi-humanoid robots for each picking. In addition, Cassie is a mobile manipulator designed for case picking and palletizing operations.

The company reported that twice as many of its robots are working in almost four times as many facilities compared to a year ago. Tutor stated it is on track to have more than 1,000 robots under contract by the end of 2027, all built in and deployed from the United States. These robots currently handle items across manufacturing and logistics networks, including breakfast cereals, snacks, candy, cosmetics, home goods, and toys.

Commercial Model and Future Growth

Instead of a traditional robots-as-a-service model, businesses pay Tutor by the hour or by the pick, matching how they pay for manual labor. Customers make no upfront purchase and sign no long-term contract, while Tutor handles deployment, maintenance, and regular software updates.

Josh Gruenstein, co-founder and CEO of Tutor Intelligence, stated that the company's models let robots perform jobs never before possible while making them affordable on a new level. The fresh funding will specifically support frontier robot foundation model training, alongside the manufacturing and deployment of Sonny and Cassie.
