iOS 27 CarPlay Features: Which iPhones Support Them?

Apple has rolled out a fresh suite of CarPlay upgrades alongside its latest software release, bringing enhanced entertainment options and smarter assistant integration to vehicles.

iOS 27 CarPlay Features: Which iPhones Support Them?

New CarPlay Upgrades in iOS 27

With the recent release of Apple's software, car owners with CarPlay support can enjoy a series of fresh additions designed to improve the in-car experience. According to details shared by Engadget, the update brings various refinements that make the interface easier and more enjoyable to navigate.

Among the visible changes is an upgraded Now Playing screen featuring a persistent mini-player complete with album artwork, playback controls, and a long-awaited progress bar. Users can swipe forward or backward through tracks or podcasts directly without interacting with their handset. Additionally, navigation apps can now share route data with the vehicle to incorporate EV charging stops and cross-check arrival times using mapping services.

Video Playback and Reliability Improvements

For the first time, CarPlay extends entertainment options beyond audio services like Apple Music and Spotify by introducing support for video applications. Drivers can now view video content directly on their vehicle's central display, provided the software is properly supported by the vehicle manufacturer.

To maintain safety standards, the video feature includes motion detection. Playback is automatically restricted to when the vehicle is parked; if the car begins moving while a video is playing, the system shifts to an audio-only mode until the vehicle comes to a complete halt.

Apple also reports general performance enhancements, noting that wireless connections are more consistent and GPS location reporting is more accurate across supported setups.

Hardware Requirements for Siri AI

While many core visual enhancements arrive across a broad range of devices, the newly integrated assistant capabilities depend heavily on device hardware. Because CarPlay relies entirely on the connected smartphone, unlocking advanced voice functions requires a specific hardware tier.

Drivers looking to utilize the updated virtual assistant will find that only specific models meet the processing criteria. Users must ensure they have an iPhone compatible with Siri AI, which restricts the feature set to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and newer generations. Owners of slightly older hardware, such as the iPhone 14, receive visual interface additions like wallpapers and the mini-player, but lack the processing capability to run the AI assistant features inside the vehicle.

Compatibility and Regional Limitations

To access any of the new system capabilities, users must ensure their device software is up to date. The update is available for the iPhone 11 and later, meaning owners of devices older than the iPhone 11 will not receive the software and will continue using CarPlay with its previously existing feature set.

Furthermore, regional restrictions apply. Due to local regulatory frameworks, the AI-driven assistant features are unavailable within the European Union. European users with supported hardware will still gain access to the standard visual upgrades, wallpapers, and media controls, but the AI functionality remains disabled in that region.

Getting Started with the Update

Before hitting the road with the new software, users should make sure they have successfully prepared and updated your iPhone to iOS 27. Checking specific preference settings afterward can help ensure a smoother and more reliable connection with the vehicle's infotainment system.
