Following earlier industry leaks, Google has officially confirmed that upcoming Googlebook detachables will expand the ecosystem beyond traditional laptops.

Google Confirms Googlebook Detachables Arriving Soon

Expanding Beyond Clamshells and Convertibles

During the Android Dev Summit 2026 earlier this week, Google outlined the future trajectory of its hardware ecosystem. In the developer keynote, the company announced that Googlebook detachables will be introduced as the next form factor, following existing clamshells and convertibles.

This reveal did not come as a complete surprise to the industry, as leaks earlier in the year had already hinted at the expansion. On stage, representatives emphasized that the Googlebook platform is designed to span a wide range of large-screen form factors, moving seamlessly from traditional clamshells to flexible convertibles and, soon, detachable devices.

Current Hardware Landscape and Limitations

At present, the initial device lineup heavily favors traditional laptop designs. Out of the first five launched devices, four function strictly as clamshells. Options currently available on the market include the HP Googlebook 14, the Dell XPS Googlebook, and the Lenovo Googlebook 15.

Additional hardware options feature standard configurations as well. Consumers can also look into the Asus Googlebook 14 or opt for the Acer Googlebook 14, which stands out as the sole convertible 2-in-1 device capable of supporting laptop, tent, and tablet modes.

Despite these hardware offerings, current limitations indicate that Google still has developmental work remaining before introducing a pure detachable device. While fullscreen apps can successfully open in a portrait tablet orientation, core interface elements such as the desktop homescreen, Overview screen, and app tray remain restricted exclusively to landscape mode.

Expected First Detachable Device from Lenovo

Industry followers anticipating the arrival of the new form factor will likely see Lenovo launch the very first Googlebook detachable. Reports building on a previous July leak indicate that the upcoming tablet will feature both a physical kickstand and a detachable keyboard attachment.

Furthermore, documentation and leaks suggest that the upcoming device may include unique design elements, such as a Glowbar placed next to the built-in camera. This detachable hardware was initially revealed alongside a smaller laptop model designed to sit below the footprint of current 15-inch options.

Implications for the Tablet Operating System Market

The expansion of Googlebook OS into the tablet space brings forward broader strategic questions regarding software platforms for high-end mobile hardware. Specifically, industry analysts are evaluating how the platform will coexist with traditional Android tablets moving forward.

While there will likely remain a distinct market segment for traditional Android tablets, the introduction of Googlebook OS aims to provide users with a more desktop-oriented computing experience. As Google continues to iterate on its software architecture, these upcoming detachable devices will serve as a critical testbed for the platform's cross-form-factor capabilities.
