Google Brings Agentic AI to Gemini, Starting With Businesses

Google has announced a major upgrade to its Gemini platform, introducing a unified agentic AI designed to plan, execute tasks, and coordinate across business systems. Initially rolling out to enterprise users, the system features its own workplace identity, multi-model support, and autonomous subagent capabilities.

Entering the Agentic Era

At a Google Cloud event, Google announced it is bringing its Gemini AI into the agentic age with the launch of a unified agent. This system is designed not just to answer questions, but to actively get things done on a user's behalf from a single interface. The announcement was detailed in an official blog post where Google announced the evolution of its workplace AI offerings.

The industry-wide shift toward agentic capabilities reflects a broader movement beyond simple conversational experiences. Modern AI tools are increasingly expected to take ownership of assigned tasks, generate code, schedule meetings, and handle complex logistical workflows. Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted that Gemini currently serves over one billion monthly active users, while nearly 90% of Fortune 100 businesses utilize Gemini Enterprise at work.

Enterprise-First Focus and Security

Given the high level of enterprise adoption, Google is initially prioritizing businesses for the new agentic rollout before expanding to everyday consumers. According to Pichai, this phased approach allows the company to properly address the harder problems surrounding security, scale, and performance that inherently accompany powerful autonomous agents.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian explained that users can assign objectives rather than mere instructions to the new agent. Consequently, the AI can plan work independently, utilize custom tools and skills, and integrate directly with internal corporate systems to achieve its targets while keeping costs controlled through multi-model orchestration and smart routing.

Multi-Model Flexibility and App Integrations

By default, the AI automatically selects the most suitable model for a given task, but users retain the option to manually choose models. The initial third-party model support begins with Anthropic's Claude models, with future expansion planned for open source and private models.

The agent seamlessly integrates with a wide array of business data and productivity platforms, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, and Snowflake. Furthermore, it securely connects with any Model Context Protocol server located either inside or outside the corporate network.

A New Workplace Identity

One of the most notable features of the new system is that the AI receives its own Workspace account, complete with a unique email address and operational context. This allows the AI to understand team structures, time zones, calendar schedules, and necessary approval workflows. Team members can interact with the agent by tagging it, emailing it, sharing documents with it, or adding it to group chats.

As the agent executes actions across enterprise workflows, it generates a transparent audit trail attributed directly to the AI rather than a human staff member. Users can closely monitor the agent's internal reasoning, delegation of responsibilities to specialized subagents, and overall progress via a centralized tasks inbox.

Availability and Early Adopters

The agentic Gemini experience is accessible across multiple platforms and devices, including iOS and Android mobile phones, Windows and Mac desktops, command line interfaces, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and Slack.

Early testing partners include Shopify, PayPal, and sportswear brand On. Meanwhile, broader Gemini Enterprise customers comprise major global organizations such as BNP Paribas, Bradesco, Merck, Orange Spain, Santee Cooper, SOMPO, Ulta Beauty, and Wesfarmers.
