Cloudflare Basin Reaches General Availability for Analytics

Cloudflare has announced the general availability of its serverless data analytics platform, rebranding the former Cloudflare Data Platform to Cloudflare Basin.

General Availability and Platform Rebranding

Initially introduced during Birthday Week 2025 as the Cloudflare Data Platform, the suite of products designed to ingest, store, and query analytical data is now officially generally available under the new name Cloudflare Basin, according to the Cloudflare Blog.

Basin operates as a serverless data analytics platform built directly on top of Apache Iceberg, the open standard for data lakes, alongside R2 Object Storage. This combination aims to provide developers with a robust infrastructure to manage large datasets efficiently.

The Core Components of Basin

The Basin family consists of three distinct products covering ingestion, storage, and querying. Basin Pipelines, formerly known as Cloudflare Pipelines, receives events from HTTP, Workers, or Cloudflare Logpush, transforms them via SQL, and writes them into Apache Iceberg tables or files.

Additionally, Basin Catalog manages Iceberg metadata and automatically maintains tables to preserve speed and cost-efficiency. Meanwhile, Basin SQL serves as the distributed serverless SQL engine enabling direct querying of Apache Iceberg tables on Cloudflare.

Development Background and Architecture

Cloudflare built the data platform after recognizing two foundational developments in modern data application architecture: the emergence of Apache Iceberg as a standard open table format and the adoption of R2 Object Storage, where zero egress charges made accessing data from various tools practical.

During the open beta phase, internal teams and external developers adopted the services for use cases ranging from real-time e-commerce optimization to telemetry ingestion and long-term billing metric storage. Early adopters helped shape the platform around speed, openness, and cost efficiency.

Speed and Ecosystem Portability

Basin is engineered for rapid execution, allowing users to establish a Catalog, configure an ingestion Pipeline, and execute queries using Basin SQL within seconds. As datasets scale, Basin Catalog compacts files to reduce I/O while Basin SQL distributes query tasks across Workers.

The open nature of the ecosystem allows developers to retain control of their data by separating storage from compute. Teams can read and write data using any Iceberg-compatible engine, including DuckDB, Snowflake, Apache Spark, and PyIceberg, enabled by zero egress fees.

Pricing Model and Getting Started

The serverless architecture supports a usage-based pricing structure where customers are billed solely when Basin ingests, processes, or queries data, eliminating hourly charges or separate infrastructure costs for hobby projects or enterprise workloads.

Developers looking to begin building can consult the Basin tutorial for a step-by-step walkthrough on delivering events to an Iceberg table managed by Basin Catalog and querying them via Basin SQL.
