Google Messages Adds Enhanced Protection Mode for Android
Google is rolling out new security capabilities for Android devices, headlined by an enhanced protection mode in Google Messages designed to combat complex messaging scams.

Introduction to Enhanced Protection Mode
For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Google is announcing new Android features to help combat messaging and phone scams, including enhanced protection mode in Google Messages. Billed as providing the most powerful and intelligent defenses against complex scam threats, this new setting introduces advanced cloud-based analysis to protect users from sophisticated bad actors.
The platform utilizes cloud Gemini models to evaluate complex message context and understand a scammer's intent more quickly when users are in a conversation with an unknown sender. This secure cloud analysis augments and extends existing on-device detection, helping to identify novel and sophisticated attacks while stopping abusers who attempt to hide their tracks.
Private AI Compute and Link Protections
To maintain user privacy, the new security mechanism relies on Private AI Compute. This architecture, which is also utilized by Pixel Screenshots and other applications, encrypts data and processes it within a secure space that Google cannot access for any other purpose.
While existing link protections work to flag malicious and phishing websites, the enhanced protection mode takes safety a step further. On-device Gemini Nano uses real-time web signals to evaluate whether an unfamiliar link is trustworthy before a user taps it. This specific feature is currently available on the Pixel 10+, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8, alongside other select devices.
Additionally, the system introduces redesigned warnings that provide extra time and clearer context, allowing users to pause before tapping links sent from numbers that are not saved in their contacts. Previously, this specific warning feature was limited to devices in select countries or those with Android Advanced Protection enabled.
Rollout Schedule and Ecosystem Expansion
The newly introduced enhanced protection mode is an opt-in setting that is scheduled to roll out over the coming weeks. At the same time, Google is actively expanding its on-device Scam Detection for chat notifications beyond Pixel devices to hardware manufactured by HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo, and Xiaomi.
Combatting Phone Scams and Call Forwarding
Beyond messaging applications, Google is targeting phone scams by expanding automatic screen-share privacy features. This capability, which hides sensitive information such as passwords and banking details in native applications, will soon apply to Chrome and WebView on devices running Android 15 and higher.
To combat one-time passcode theft, Google will block applications from quietly enabling call forwarding in the background. This particular call forwarding protection is slated to become available starting in early December on Pixel and other select devices.
In situations where a scammer attempts to trick a user into manually typing an MMI forwarding code directly onto their phone's dial pad, Android will issue a proactive warning before the action can take effect.
