Coolpad has announced the Cool X Wide, a budget-friendly Android slab phone that brings a widescreen design reminiscent of foldable devices without the high price tag.

Coolpad Cool X Wide Launches as $150 Android Slab Phone

A Widescreen Design Inspired by Foldables

The design trends of widescreen folding devices—such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Huawei Pura X View, and the iPhone Duo—are beginning to influence traditional slab phones. Following the launch of the Huawei Pura X View in China, the new Coolpad Cool X Wide arrives with a much wider screen than typically found on standard non-folding devices.

This expanded screen real estate resembles what users might expect from a tiny tablet or the closed states of the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, the Cool X Wide delivers this experience without the huge price tags, budget-stressing repair costs, or inevitable screen creases associated with folding displays.

Pricing, Colors, and Availability

The Coolpad Cool X Wide is currently available for preorder through JD.com in China for 999 Chinese Yuan, which equates to roughly $150. Buyers can choose among black, red, and white color options, with official shipping anticipated to commence on November 8th.

While its display mimics the appearance of pricey modern foldables, the device functions entirely as a budget-conscious Android phone. Base configurations include 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Upgrading the storage to 256GB raises the price to approximately $180, while increasing the RAM to 12GB brings the cost to around $209.

Hardware Specifications and Performance

The Cool X Wide is equipped with a 6.38-inch display that utilizes a 16:10 aspect ratio. The screen supports refresh rates up to 90Hz and features a 1,158x720 resolution. On the back, the phone includes a 50-megapixel main camera, paired with a 4,600mAh internal battery.

Running on Android 16 straight out of the box, the handset relies on a MediaTek Helio G99 processor. As Android Authority points out, the choice of processor restricts the phone's wireless connectivity exclusively to 4G networks rather than modern 5G bands.

Physical Dimensions and Form Factor

For users interested in how a 16:10 widescreen slab phone feels during everyday use, the physical dimensions offer an interesting comparison. The Cool X Wide matches the vertical height of the iPhone 18 Pro almost exactly.

However, while Apple's device measures 2.83 inches in width, the new Coolpad smartphone spans a much wider 3.72 inches across, emphasizing its unique stance in the traditional slab phone market.
