Microsoft Gives Copilot More Control Over Windows and Files
At a recent Windows and Surface event, Microsoft showcased significant upgrades to its Copilot AI system, granting it deeper access to local files and operating system controls through a new concept called Hybrid Intelligence.

Introduction to Hybrid Intelligence
During a recent Windows and Surface event, Microsoft introduced major upgrades to its Copilot AI system, designed to give the assistant greater control over local files and operating system actions. As detailed by [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/tech/1007113/microsoft-windows-copilot-ai-control-search-hybrid-intelligence), this capability is part of an initiative that Microsoft refers to as "Hybrid Intelligence."
The core idea behind Hybrid Intelligence is to allow various apps and tools to rely on a balanced mix of local and cloud-based artificial intelligence models. By blending these computational resources, the system aims to accomplish complex tasks efficiently without relying solely on remote servers.
Demonstration and Practical Use Cases
To demonstrate how Hybrid Intelligence functions in practice, Jacob Andreou, Microsoft's executive vice president of Copilot, walked the audience through a video presentation on stage. The demonstration featured Microsoft’s [Autopilot tool](https://www.theverge.com/news/1000532/microsoft-copilot-super-app-chat-coding-autopilot) assisting with a real-world task: filing taxes.
During the scenario, Andreou explained that he had received an email from his accountant and asked the AI agent to gather the necessary documentation. Utilizing Hybrid Intelligence, the tool successfully searched across different folders on the PC to locate the required files, renamed them appropriately, compressed them into a single zip folder, and drafted a ready-to-send email with the zip file attached.
Rollout Timeline for Copilot Updates
Following the on-stage demonstration, Jacob Andreou provided a timeline regarding when users can expect these advanced capabilities to arrive on their personal computers. According to Microsoft's executive leadership, the features powered by Hybrid Intelligence will be rolling out to Copilot over the "next couple months."
These impending updates represent a significant shift in how users interact with their machines, moving from traditional manual file management and searching to natural language orchestration of operating system tasks.
New Windows Search Experience
In addition to the Copilot enhancements, Microsoft also highlighted a revamped Windows search experience designed to streamline user workflows. Pavan Davuluri, the head of Windows and Surface, explained that the updated search bar allows users to execute quick actions instantly.
Among the capabilities demonstrated for the new search bar are turning on dark mode, adjusting microphone volume using an in-line slider, and even sending a text message directly from the interface. The newly redesigned search experience is scheduled to become available starting this fall for Windows 11 PCs.
