Tackling the Devastating Toll of Pediatric Sepsis

Sepsis is an acute inflammation triggered by infection and remains a leading cause of childhood mortality worldwide. According to public health data, roughly 3 million children under the age of five lose their lives to the condition annually. When standard treatments like antibiotics fail to halt an overreacting immune system, medical intervention must turn to filtering the patient's blood to remove deadly toxins.

Stepping into this critical healthcare space is Efferon, a medical startup selected as one of the companies featured at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026’s Startup Battlefield 200. The enterprise has engineered medical devices that function as absorbers of dangerous cytokines and toxins, with the overarching mission of drastically lowering childhood mortality rates and accelerating patient recovery.

A Dual-Action Mechanism for Blood Purification

Dima Romashin, co-founder and CEO of Efferon, draws an analogy between what happens in the human body during sepsis and a destructive fire. In a severe blaze, there are two distinct components: the physical flame itself and the thick smoke that the fire produces. Romashin explains that in the context of sepsis, endotoxins act as the flames while cytokines represent the smoke.

Unlike other devices currently available on the market, Efferon has developed a specialized mechanism designed to absorb both endotoxins and cytokines at the same time. By targeting both elements of the immune overreaction simultaneously, the company aims to offer a more comprehensive approach to blood purification during critical medical emergencies.

Engineering Specifically for Pediatric Physiology

Although the company produces absorbers geared toward adult patients, its pediatric-specific offering is proving especially vital. Young children possess a significantly lower circulating blood volume compared to adults, meaning they require medical equipment meticulously engineered to match their unique biological physiology. To address this need, the startup designed Efferon NEO.

In April, the Efferon NEO device secured a CE mark, which serves as Europe’s equivalent to FDA approval. This regulatory milestone established the product as Europe’s first multimodal extracorporeal blood purification device specifically engineered for pediatric sepsis applications.

Global Deployment and Commercialization Strategy

Efferon NEO is presently deployed in intensive care units across 30 countries, finding clinical application in hospitals throughout Europe, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. Building on its current international footprint, the medical device company is actively preparing to file for regulatory approval from the FDA in the United States.

From a commercial standpoint, the enterprise is on track to achieve $2 million in annualized revenue by the close of 2026. The underlying technology was originally conceptualized and developed by scientists at Moscow State University, including co-founder Ivan Bessonov. Recognizing the profound potential of the research, serial entrepreneur Dima Romashin stepped in as CEO to spearhead the commercialization efforts.

Measuring Success Beyond Traditional Metrics

While the fast-paced growth seen across modern artificial intelligence startups may outpace medical device manufacturing, Romashin emphasizes that the company evaluates its achievements through an entirely different lens. For Efferon, true business and clinical success is measured by a far more meaningful metric: every individual child who recovers and safely gets to go home.
