Google Wallet State IDs: Availability and Setup Guide
States across the US are slowly rolling out support for adding driver’s licenses and IDs to the Google Wallet app on Android, allowing users to store identification alongside other passes and payment methods.

How to Add Your State ID to Google Wallet
States across the US are slowly rolling out support for adding your driver’s license or ID to the Google Wallet app on Android. To begin the process, tap the "plus" button next to "View more" at the bottom of the app. From there, choose "ID & personal info" and then select "Driver’s license or state id."
Once you select your state, follow the on-screen instructions. The procedure involves taking a picture of the front and back of your physical card. Additionally, users must record a short video of themselves for verification purposes, as a photo from this video will be submitted directly to the ID issuer.
Managing and Securing Your Digital ID
After your digital ID is approved, it will appear below the carousel of payment methods alongside your other passes. Users can rearrange the order of their cards, a feature tied to broader interface updates like the Google Wallet rolling out stacked card list redesign on Android.
If your phone goes missing, you can remotely remove your ID online by navigating to your Google account settings. Furthermore, Google aims to enhance user privacy by exploring technologies like Zero-Knowledge Proof to handle verifications without linking back to a user's personal identity.
Where You Can Use Your Digital State ID
The primary place you can use a digital ID is at TSA checkpoints in select US airports. Travelers can utilize this by tapping their phone at an NFC terminal, reviewing the information shared with the TSA, and authenticating via device unlock. Alternatively, a QR code method is available by opening the ID directly inside Google Wallet.
Beyond airports, certain apps from car rental services are beginning to accept digital IDs for identity and age verification. On mobile devices, confirming age verification is as simple as responding to a system-level prompt sheet, while desktop web experiences require scanning a QR code.
Looking ahead, these digital credentials are slated for use at Department of Motor Vehicles offices in states such as Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico to provide streamlined customer experiences.
Current Limitations and Physical ID Requirements
Despite the ongoing digital expansion, official regulations mandate that users must still carry their physical ID cards at all times. For many everyday transactions, such as purchasing alcohol, digital versions may not yet be accepted.
Google is also working on expanding digital ID use cases to help users recover Amazon accounts, access online health services with CVS and MyChart by Epic, and verify profiles on platforms like Uber and more.
