Google Launches Universal Cart Shopping Tool in the US
Google has officially launched its new Universal Cart shopping tool for users in the United States, bringing cross-retailer product tracking and price alerts to Search and the Gemini app.

Launch of the Universal Cart in the United States
Google has officially rolled out its new Universal Cart shopping tool for users in the United States, making the feature available across Google Search and the Gemini app. The company originally previewed the tool during its Google I/O event in May, positioning it as a way to streamline online shopping and help users keep track of items found across the internet.
Centralizing Cross-Retailer Shopping and Tracking
The core function of the newly launched feature is to act as a unified digital space where shoppers can save and monitor potential purchases from multiple different merchants. When users discover products while browsing through Google platforms, they can save them to their cart and return later without losing their progress or having to hunt down the items again.
In addition to organizing items, Google designed the cart to actively assist shoppers by monitoring price drops and restocks. Users can receive notifications when a saved product drops in price or when an out-of-stock item becomes available again, sparing them from checking individual retailer websites manually. The tool also displays relevant promotional codes alongside saved products.
Payment Options and Open Standards
When it comes to purchasing items, Universal Cart offers flexible checkout options. Users can choose to pay directly using Google Wallet, which can analyze the perks provided by saved credit cards to help determine the best payment method. Alternatively, shoppers can transfer items to the merchant's own cart and complete the checkout process directly with the retailer.
Under the hood, checkout procedures are tied to Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP. This open standard was introduced earlier in the year to help retailers and AI agents work together seamlessly across different steps of the shopping journey, including the final checkout stage.

Broader AI Ecosystem and Future Integration Plans
Universal Cart joins Google's existing suite of AI-powered shopping features, which includes conversational product discovery within Search's AI Mode and the "Let Google Call" tool. The latter feature utilizes an AI agent to contact nearby brick-and-mortar stores to verify item availability.
While the tool is currently accessible via Search and the Gemini app, Google has outlined plans to integrate Universal Cart into other platforms such as Gmail and YouTube eventually, though a formal timeline for those additions has not yet been announced.
Growing Competition in AI-Assisted E-Commerce
Google's launch arrives amid intensifying competition within the agentic commerce and AI-assisted shopping landscape. Major tech competitors and platforms have been actively introducing features that allow AI systems to browse catalogs, assist consumers, and handle transactions on a user's behalf as companies look for ways to expand the practical utility of modern chatbots.
Other industry players, including OpenAI and Amazon, have rolled out their own agentic shopping systems to capture consumer interest in automated online retail. Meanwhile, platform providers like Shopify have also updated their infrastructure to open product catalogs up to a wider array of external AI agents.
