Google Connects In-Car Gemini to Gmail and Calendar with Opt-In Personal Intelligence
Google is upgrading the Gemini AI assistant found in millions of vehicles with a new personal intelligence feature that connects data across various company services.

Bringing Personal Intelligence to the Driver's Seat
Google is making the Gemini AI assistant that is already present in millions of cars, trucks, and SUVs significantly more personal, a move that could push consumers even deeper into the company’s product ecosystem. The company announced that it is upgrading vehicle-based Gemini systems with a personal intelligence feature capable of pulling information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history, and other connected Google services to better understand driver preferences, activities, and past experiences.
Rollout Schedule for Android Auto and Built-In Systems
The company stated that it will roll out “Personal Intelligence with Gemini” to vehicles through two main methods. The first is via Android Auto, an application that runs on a user's phone and wirelessly communicates to project navigation, media, and messaging directly onto a vehicle's infotainment system. The second method involves Google Built-in, which refers to software and services directly integrated into the vehicle itself.
The feature launches on Android Auto, starting today, and will subsequently expand to cars equipped with Google Built-in over the coming months. Google initially launched Gemini in Android Auto last November, while the broader Gemini Personal Intelligence feature rolled out across the U.S. in March and is currently in beta globally.
Connecting Apps and Cross-Pollinating Data
This latest upgrade aims to connect the dots across a user's various Google applications. In order for Personalized Intelligence to function, drivers are required to explicitly opt in. Once enabled, users can anticipate cross-pollination of information between services. For example, a driver navigating to the airport may receive an alert notifying them that a flight listed on their calendar is currently delayed.
Complex Requests and Natural Language Processing
Google noted that the new capability will allow users to execute more complex requests using natural language. Revisiting the airport scenario, a driver could ask the AI assistant for their flight gate information and quickly follow up with an inquiry regarding whether the flight is still on schedule. According to the company, Gemini will provide answers to both questions simultaneously.
User Controls and Data Privacy
While this high level of service emmeshment might cause discomfort for some consumers concerned about privacy, Google emphasized that users retain full control over their data under the Personal Intelligence system. The feature can be switched on or off at any moment, and users maintain the option to selectively choose which specific applications they prefer to connect to the assistant.
