Expanding Personal Intelligence to the Road

Google is making the Gemini AI assistant found in vehicles significantly more personal, a move that integrates drivers deeper into the company’s digital ecosystem. The company announced that it is upgrading vehicle-based Gemini assistants with a personal intelligence feature capable of drawing from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history, and other connected Google services. This capability helps the assistant better understand user preferences, recent activities, and past experiences directly from the driver's seat.

Google initially brought its Gemini assistant to Android Auto last year before expanding the rollout to cars equipped with Google built-in systems in April. Several prominent automakers, including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar, have manufactured newer vehicles featuring Google built-in support, which natively runs Android applications on the car's infotainment screen. Bringing Personal Intelligence to these systems marks the next major phase of integration for Google's automotive software strategy.

How Personal Intelligence Works While Driving

The updated assistant is designed to handle complex requests through natural language by connecting data points across different Google applications. For example, Google notes that drivers can ask about flight statuses if they are driving toward the airport. Gemini can locate flight details from a confirmation message stored in Gmail and subsequently look up real-time flight conditions. Drivers can also make requests like asking the assistant to navigate to a doctor's appointment pulled straight from their calendar or finding a specific location from a photo taken the previous week.

According to Google, generative AI outputs improve when the system has broader context about the user and the surrounding world. By leveraging data it already holds from apps like Gmail and Calendar, the AI aims to reduce the effort required by drivers to give detailed navigation instructions, allowing them to keep their primary focus on the road.

Rollout Schedule and Platform Support

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to vehicles through two primary methods: Android Auto, which runs on a connected smartphone and projects interface data to the vehicle display, and Google Built-in, which provides software directly integrated into the car's computer system. The update begins its rollout in Android Auto today, while support for vehicles utilizing Google Built-in is scheduled to follow in the coming months.

For vehicles running Google Built-in software, personalized results will only appear if a user connects a mobile device over Bluetooth. For Android Auto users, the feature relies on the phone remaining connected to the car to deliver tailored responses based on account data.

Privacy Controls and Opt-In Settings

Google has stressed that Personal Intelligence remains an entirely optional feature that requires explicit user opt-in before connecting personal app data to the in-car assistant. If a user chooses not to enable Personal Intelligence, core vehicle functions such as navigation, music streaming, hands-free calling, and general queries will continue to operate normally without tailored data integration.

Drivers who want to check, adjust, or disable these configurations can find the relevant settings inside the Gemini app. The Personal Intelligence choices are located within the connected apps section of the application settings, where users can selectively toggle access for individual services like Google Workspace applications, search history, and photos. This level of control allows drivers to manage how much personal information informs assistant replies, especially when multiple people share access to a vehicle's infotainment system.
