Google Faces Criminal Probe Over Finnish AI Data Center Clearing
Local authorities in Finland have launched a criminal investigation into environmental damage caused by Google's Finnish subsidiary following massive, unapproved forest clearings for AI data center projects.

Criminal Investigation Launched in Finland
A criminal investigation into the environmental damage caused by Google’s Finnish subsidiary has been launched. According to an official police statement, Tuike Finland Oy is being investigated after authorities received five complaints regarding the Muhos data center project.
The police investigation is backed by Finland’s Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV). Google and its subsidiary are accused of suspected breaches of environmental law and environmental damage. In addition, investigators are looking into lesser criminal offenses related to ambiguities and shortcomings in drainage and water management at the site.
Scale of Deforestation and Unauthorized Clearings
Google representatives have previously publicly apologized for the unauthorized forest clearings near Muhos, which transformed 816 acres of forest into an expanse of mud. Reports indicate that trees were removed prior to mandatory environmental impact assessments.
Beyond the site near Muhos, the tech giant also jumped the gun and plowed ahead with data center development by clearing 500 acres of forest near Otanmäki. Despite these unauthorized actions, a Google representative told Reuters that the company would cooperate fully with the police investigation and continue focusing on maintaining compliance at its sites.
Impact on Local Wildlife and Communities
The rapid deforestation has triggered immediate ecological repercussions. Wolves have descended on Finnish villages after their natural habitats were destroyed to make way for the Google AI data centers, adding further anxiety for residents who were already concerned about data center developments.
Data center developments were already a thorny issue with locals, with concerns covering potential construction and operating noise, pollution, utility competition, and environmental damage. These worries were severely amplified by the unexpected presence of wild animals moving out of the cleared forests into inhabited areas.

Energy Concerns and Regional Appeal
Google has traditionally viewed Finland as an attractive location for data center development due to its cool climate, affordable power, and government endorsement of artificial intelligence projects. The tech giant has also benefited from developing in low population density areas with a populace historically known for having a low propensity for protests.
However, the latest environmental violations are severely testing the Finnish public. Alongside habitat destruction, pollution, and the criminal investigation, the facility's footprint threatens potential utility competition that could lead to electricity bill hikes of up to 40% for locals, making the ongoing projects an increasingly controversial topic across the region.
Ongoing Response
As the criminal probe proceeds, executive teams at the tech giant will likely focus heavily on the scale of potential punishments and any proposed environmental remedies. Meanwhile, Finnish government representatives have yet to comment publicly on the ongoing case.
