Global Default Policy for GitHub Copilot Features Rolls Out
GitHub has initiated the gradual rollout of enforcement for its global default policy governing generally available Copilot features and supported client capabilities across Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans.

Rollout Schedule and Scope
Following an initial announcement in September regarding a global default policy for generally available GitHub Copilot features and supported client capabilities on Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans, enforcement has officially begun. According to the [GitHub Changelog](https://github.blog/changelog/2026-10-22-global-default-for-copilot-features-generally-available/), the gradual rollout runs through October 26, meaning the policy may take effect at varying times across different enterprises and organizations.
The enforcement applies to eligible settings located under 'Features & clients' and 'MCP servers in Copilot'. Administrators can review their current configurations by navigating to AI Controls, then Copilot, and finally looking at the default policy for new features. For further details regarding which options are eligible and any potential exceptions, administrators can consult the official [documentation on default availability](https://docs.github.com/copilot/concepts/enterprise/default-availability).
How Unconfigured Features Are Handled
Once the policy officially takes effect for an organization or enterprise, any eligible generally available features and capabilities that have been left unconfigured will be automatically set according to the selected global default. This default can be configured as Enabled, Disabled, or Let organizations decide.
Platform administrators maintain full flexibility and retain the ability to make explicit choices for individual features at any time. Importantly, this automated adjustment functions as a one-time change. Subsequent modifications to the default policy will not alter feature policies that have already been explicitly set.
Preservation of Explicit and Preview Choices
Organizations that have already defined explicit configurations will find that their choices remain fully preserved. If an administrator previously enabled or disabled an individual feature, the automated rollout process will not modify that specific setting.
Similarly, preview features continue to operate under an opt-in model. If an organization explicitly opted into a preview feature that later transitions to general availability, that choice is preserved. Otherwise, the global default policy will apply once the feature becomes officially eligible.
Community Engagement and Support
As enterprises and organizations adapt to the new global default policy framework, developers and administrators are encouraged to share feedback and discuss best practices. Users can join ongoing conversations and connect with peers [within GitHub Community](https://github.org/orgs/community/discussions/208757) to address any questions regarding the rollout.
Additional updates and technical guidance related to account administration, platform management, and other enterprise features can be tracked directly through the broader [Back to changelog](https://github.blog/changelog/) resources provided by the platform.
