The Mega-Merger Rebranding

The upcoming $110 billion mega-merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. will officially go by the name of Skydance, as revealed by Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison in a post on X. The deal unites two long-running film studios and brings HBO Max and Paramount+ streaming services under the same corporate roof, taking its name from the original company Ellison founded in 2006.

In his announcement shared on October 2, 2026, Ellison emphasized that the new corporate identity is designed to let both historic studios remain in the spotlight rather than overshadowing them. He noted that both Paramount and Warner Bros. have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies, and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations.

Regulatory Hurdles and Closing Timeline

The corporate consolidation follows a drawn-out corporate battle that previously saw twelve states sue to block the massive transaction over worries regarding market competition and consumer impact. However, a judge recently approved a settlement with state attorneys general, clearing the way for the transaction to finalize.

The deal is expected to close in October, officially bringing together networks and studios that have shaped over a century of culture. Prior to the finalization of the Paramount agreement, Netflix had previously engaged in discussions to acquire Warner Bros.’ streaming and studio businesses before the broader corporate transaction moved forward.

A Vast Portfolio of Iconic Franchises

Once the transaction is fully complete, the newly formed Skydance will oversee an immense catalog of entertainment properties and streaming networks. The portfolio will include HBO Max, Paramount+, and television networks such as CBS, CNN, MTV, TBS, Comedy Central, and Food Network.

Additionally, the company will control major cultural franchises including the Harry Potter series, the DC Universe, Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, and Yellowstone. David Ellison noted in his statement that combining these studios equips them with a more powerful engine while preserving what has made each brand iconic.

Editorial Independence and Production Commitments

Despite clearing its final major regulatory hurdles, questions and concerns remain regarding the editorial independence of news organizations like CNN and CBS News under the unified corporate structure. To address these concerns, Paramount has reportedly signed off on a news editorial independence board designed to oversee both networks.

Alongside editorial oversight commitments, reports indicate that the studio has also committed to maintaining a steady output of theatrical releases, targeting around 30 theatrical movie releases per year as it transitions into its new era as Skydance.
