Applications open for sixth cohort

MassRobotics has opened applications for Cohort 6 of its Healthcare Robotics Startup Catalyst Program, giving robotics and automation startups another opportunity to work with industry mentors and healthcare specialists. The four-month, non-equity program is designed to help teams move from promising technology toward clinical readiness, technical validation and a clearer route to market in healthcare and life sciences.

Applications are open until December 31, 2026. The selected cohort will run from February through June 2027 and will conclude with company showcases at the Robotics Summit & Expo in Boston. MassRobotics said the showcase will give participating companies an opportunity to present their technologies through the event's wider robotics industry audience.

Intel joins the steering committee

Intel is joining the program's steering committee this year, alongside founding partners Festo, Novanta and Mitsubishi Electric U.S. The addition brings Intel's Health and Life Sciences team into a program focused on robotics applications that must meet demanding clinical, technical and operational requirements.

According to the program material, Intel will contribute mentorship and technical expertise in edge artificial intelligence and on-device computing. The areas are particularly relevant to surgical and procedure-enabling robotics and operating-room automation, which MassRobotics identifies as areas of growing interest among companies in the healthcare cohort.

Festo has supported the program for three years, according to Johannes Linzbach, head of Research Hub Boston at the company. Linzbach said Festo's role has developed from founding membership to supporting startups such as Tenomix, and that the company plans to bring its experience and ecosystem connections to the sixth cohort.

Program targets practical healthcare milestones

The catalyst connects selected startups with senior mentors from MassRobotics' corporate partners, practicing clinicians and organizations in the medical field. Participants are expected to work toward practical milestones rather than pursuing development in isolation. Those milestones can include proof-of-concept builds, pilot design, regulatory planning and systems integration.

The program's planned support includes structured onboarding, goal setting and biweekly mentor working sessions. Startups will also receive tailored workshops based on the needs of the cohort, with topics including regulatory strategy, cybersecurity, software bills of materials, clinical workflow and pilot design. MassRobotics will provide additional visibility through its own channels and the June showcase.

The initiative is open to companies developing robotics or automation for healthcare and biotechnology. Relevant areas include laboratory and pharmaceutical automation, diagnostics and imaging workflows, hospital logistics, operating-room automation, rehabilitation and assistive devices, and surgical or interventional robotics. Enabling technologies such as sensing, precision motion, edge AI, on-device computing and medical-device cybersecurity are also included.

Global applicants from seed to Series C

MassRobotics is accepting applications from robotics startups around the world, including both early-stage and more mature companies. The program specifically encourages companies ranging from seed through Series C funding to apply, broadening the opportunity beyond startups at the earliest stage of development.

Applicants will be assessed on technical maturity, clinical relevance, the feasibility of near-term milestones, overall program fit and alignment with available mentors. MassRobotics said teams that can pursue a proof-of-concept during the four-month program are especially encouraged to apply. This emphasis is intended to connect mentoring and technical support with a defined development objective.

The application review process will continue after the deadline. MassRobotics plans to evaluate applications and conduct interviews from January 1 through January 20, 2027, before announcing the Healthcare Robotics Startup Catalyst cohort on January 29. The schedule gives selected teams a defined period to prepare for the February start.

Alumni track record since 2021

MassRobotics said 35 startups have joined the healthcare catalyst since its launch in 2021. The participating companies have ranged from pre-seed ventures to Series A businesses and have come from locations including Boston, Toronto, Paris, Barcelona and Sydney, among others.

According to MassRobotics, alumni have gone on to complete a public listing, advance multiple proof-of-concept deployments and collectively disclose more than $180 million in funding. The organization presents those outcomes as evidence that the program can help healthcare robotics companies progress from early prototypes toward market-ready platforms, while noting that the companies have followed different development paths.

Whelix CEO Bingda Li said the program gave his cell-culture automation company access to people who had faced similar deep-technology challenges. He credited technical support from Festo and Mitsubishi Electric U.S., together with guidance on technical development, business strategy, go-to-market planning and product feedback, for helping the company make decisions faster. The sixth cohort will build on the same model as MassRobotics seeks applicants able to define and pursue concrete healthcare robotics milestones.
