Apple Debuts the iPhone Duo: What to Know

Introduction to Apple's First Folding Phone

The long-awaited [first folding smartphone](https://www.wired.com/story/apple-debuts-the-iphone-duo-its-first-folding-iphone/) from Apple has officially arrived, marking a radical change for the iPhone lineup. Arriving years after the category was established, the iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display. While the device introduces a brand new shape and size, it also comes with a starting price of $1,999, positioning it as the most expensive iPhone in the current lineup.

Pre-orders begin ahead of the official launch, with units shipping to buyers. Because of its unique proportions, navigating apps requires some adjustments. Apple has updated iOS to take advantage of the folding form factor, aligning navigational elements on the right rail rather than centering them at the bottom.

Hardware Trade-Offs and Touch ID Return

Despite its premium price tag, the iPhone Duo comes with several hardware trade-offs. Most notably, the device does not feature Face ID. Due to space constraints within the thin chassis, Apple has brought back Touch ID via the side power button on a flagship iPhone for the first time. Additionally, the Action Button has been removed, leaving users to rely on the Control Center or the side-mounted Camera Control button.

In the camera department, the Duo features two rear cameras without a dedicated telephoto lens. Instead, it relies on a digital crop of the main 48-megapixel sensor for zoom functionality. The front-facing camera also utilizes a 12-megapixel resolution rather than higher-tier specifications found on other flagship devices.

Software Optimization and Third-Party Apps

[Apple has optimized iOS 27 to take advantage of the new foldable form factor](https://www.engadget.com/2261250/iphone-duo-vs-standard-software-differences/), allowing system menus and native apps to adapt smoothly when the hinge is bent. However, third-party applications require developers to push specific updates. While major services like Slack, Instagram, DoorDash, and WhatsApp have released updates, users may initially encounter layout irregularities or black bars on certain unoptimized applications.

On the inner 7.6-inch display, users can run two apps side by side by dragging applications from the bottom into a split-screen state. Tapping the middle dividing bar locks the app pair together for quick access in the recent apps menu.

Pricing, Financing, and Trade-In Deals

With prices starting at $1,999, Apple and major telecommunications carriers are providing various trade-in and financing incentives. Apple's official trade-in program offers up to $885 off depending on the exchanged device. Customers can also utilize Apple Card monthly installments or financing partnerships with Klarna starting at $57.99 per month.

Carrier promotions are also available for prospective buyers. AT&T provides up to $1,200 in trade-in credits for eligible devices, while other providers offer alternative discounts and promotional pricing for qualifying customers.

Accessories and Display Maintenance

Apple has introduced dedicated accessories for the foldable device, including a $79 plastic iPhone Duo Case and a $129 magnetic Duo Folio case equipped with a built-in kickstand. The device also supports standard accessories like wireless chargers and magnetic car mounts through [MagSafe](https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-magsafe-accessories/), though uneven weight distribution may require adjustments.

Regarding maintenance, the inner display features an integral nano-texture finish. Apple explicitly warns users not to attempt to remove this finish, as doing so will void the warranty. Repairs for damaged nano-texture coatings can be serviced through Apple Authorized Service Providers.
