SpaceX Unveils Plans to Become a Major Mobile Carrier
SpaceX has detailed its broader ambitions to move beyond satellite internet broadband services by acquiring a nationwide spectrum portfolio.

Expanding Beyond Satellite Broadband
SpaceX has formally [revealed] his strategic plan to evolve from a traditional satellite internet broadband service provider into a major mobile carrier. To achieve this objective, the company has agreed to acquire 100 percent of Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio.
According to the company, this transaction involves a low-band spectrum license portfolio comprising up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. While the transaction remains subject to formal regulatory approval from the FCC, securing this spectrum portfolio addresses one of the primary technical gaps remaining to turn Starlink into a major mobile carrier in the United States.
Building on Previous Spectrum Investments
This latest development follows earlier network expansions, including when SpaceX acquired spectrum licenses [from EchoStar] late last year. Those prior acquisitions included vital frequencies utilized across the United States for commercial wireless services, encompassing both mobile and satellite communications.
However, the new low-band broadband spectrum acquisition specifically targets indoor connectivity challenges. By obtaining frequencies that can effectively navigate physical structures, the initiative enables Starlink Mobile signals to penetrate walls and other difficult architectural obstacles.

Overcoming Technical and Indoor Challenges
While more established telecommunications carriers have traditionally maintained access to a wider range of bands, this low-band strategy positions the company to offer a robust and veritable alternative to existing carrier networks. Because the vast majority of current mobile devices already support the 800 MHz band, SpaceX will be able to deliver its services to millions of potential customers regardless of their specific handset models.
As noted in the company's official announcements, the acquisition of this new low-band spectrum paired with its Gen2 constellation will allow Starlink Mobile to become the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum simultaneously. This configuration ensures reliable service inside buildings, while Starlink broadband internet continues to supply connectivity in remote and far-flung geographic locations.
Next-Generation Satellite Deployment
In tandem with its terrestrial spectrum goals, infrastructural upgrades in space are moving forward. The Federal Communications Commission has recently authorized SpaceX to deploy 15,000 Starlink Mobile Gen2 satellites optimized specifically for the 2 GHz spectrum.
According to corporate updates, these upcoming satellites will possess the capacity to deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth offered by the current satellite generation. This massive capacity boost will equip SpaceX with the technological capability required to deliver high-speed internet and expanded mobile services across significantly more regions worldwide.
