Google has expanded its wearable lineup with the introduction of the Fitbit Edge, bridging the gap between screenless trackers and full smartwatches.

Google Announces the New Fitbit Edge

Google has officially revealed the Fitbit Edge following earlier social media teases. Positioned as a direct successor to older display-equipped models, the new fitness tracker brings a pill-shaped capsule design with a minimalist OLED display to users who prefer a screen over screenless alternatives like the Fitbit Air.

The device is priced at $179.99 and is currently available for preorder, with official store availability scheduled for October 27. Unlike the company's full smartwatches, the Edge is designed to be compatible with both Android devices and iPhones via the Google Health app.

Display, Build, and User-Replaceable Battery

The Fitbit Edge upgrades past display sizes with a larger 1.34-inch screen, offering additional real estate for glancing at metrics mid-workout. It also includes an IP68 rating for protection against the elements.

In a notable first for the brand, the Edge features a user-replaceable battery. This design choice aligns with broader efforts to make Google wearables more repairable, and it also anticipates upcoming battery regulations set to take effect next year in the European Union. Repair options will vary depending on regional availability.

Advanced Health Sensors and Tracking Capabilities

The tracker borrows several advanced attributes from the Pixel Watch line, including an altimeter that uses atmospheric pressure to measure elevation changes, record elevation gain and loss, and track floors climbed. It also replaces standard device temperature sensors with a far-field skin temperature sensor.

Furthermore, the Edge brings back built-in GPS—noted by Google to feature a 40 percent improvement in tracking accuracy—alongside electrical sensors that work with the ECG app. Google also states that the device includes continuous heart rate monitoring and rhythm assessments.

When paired with a Google Health Premium subscription, users can leverage advanced features such as blood pressure trends without manual calibration and insulin resistance trends. Sleep tracking has also been enhanced, featuring 15 percent more accurate sleep stage detection compared to previous model generations.

Gemini Integration and Smart Features

Google has integrated Gemini Intelligence to power advanced automatic activity tracking, allowing the Edge to identify up to 100 workout types and support more than 50 total exercise modes. Subscribers can also tap into the Google Health Coach to build personalized weekly routines and training plans.

The device supports music playback control on connected Bluetooth devices, and turn-by-turn directions via Google Maps are scheduled to arrive later in the year. However, the wearable omits a near-field communication (NFC) sensor, meaning it does not support contactless payments through Google Wallet.

Battery Performance and Band Options

The 65mAh battery delivers up to a week of battery life on a full charge, which takes approximately 90 minutes. Google notes that a quick five-minute charge can provide a full day of battery life.

The Edge comes in colorways such as Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon. Customers can pair it with various band styles, including the Active Band, Active Sport Band, Performance Loop Band, Magnet Band, and Metal Links Band. A Stephen Curry Special Edition is also available for $219.99, featuring a basketball-themed clock face, a Rye colorway, and a water-repellent, moisture-wicking band.
