Xreal Unveils Android XR-Powered Aura Wired Headset

Introduction to Android XR and the Xreal Aura

At the Android Dev Summit, Google's smart glasses partner Xreal officially launched the new Xreal Aura wired smart glasses, which are powered by the Android XR and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite platforms. According to TechCrunch, the companies had previously teased the glasses earlier in the year at Google's I/O developer conference. Google is relying on hardware partners like Samsung and Xreal to bring devices powered by its Android XR platform to consumers as competition heats up in the smart eyewear market.

Design and Processing Architecture

Unlike standalone headsets that handle all calculations internally, the Xreal Aura smart glasses are tethered to a smartphone-like processing device that handles the primary computing tasks. The glasses then project and display the content directly into the wearer's field of view. Its physical design leans closer to Meta's lightweight smart glasses than larger, standalone headsets like Apple's Vision Pro. However, users must carry the processing puck, and the glasses themselves weigh 95 grams compared to some lighter alternative models on the market.

Display Optics and Audio Capabilities

On the optical front, the Xreal Aura utilizes Sony Micro-OLED displays delivering a 1200p resolution at a 120 Hz refresh rate, accompanied by a 95-degree field of view. For sound, the headset incorporates Bose technology to power audio delivery during video playback and music listening. Users can also connect external computers or handheld gaming consoles directly to the Xreal Aura via USB-C to utilize it as an augmented display for productivity and entertainment configurations.

Software, App Ecosystem, and Gemini Integration

Out of the box, the Aura supports a wide array of popular Google Play applications and games, alongside dedicated XR-specific launch experiences. Supported titles and experiences include the NBA App for Android XR, Nevatars, Fallout: Factions, Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, the NASCAR XR App, and the San Francisco Ballet Company's production of 'The Nutcracker.' Furthermore, because the device runs on Android XR, Google's Gemini is integrated as an on-device Q&A assistant capable of helping users interpret and understand on-screen context.

Pricing, Configurations, and Market Availability

The Xreal Aura is available for order beginning today across the United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea, with shipping scheduled to start by mid-November. The 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration is priced at $1,279, though a limited launch price of $1,099 will remain active through December. Meanwhile, the higher-end 16GB RAM and 512GB storage model carries a standard price tag of $1,499, with a December promotional launch price set at $1,299.
