Early-stage and follow-on investors in the prominent AI lab are already holding billions in paper returns ahead of an expected public listing.

Anthropic Backers Eye Major Returns Ahead of Expected IPO

Approaching a Historic Public Listing

The public listing for AI lab Anthropic is anticipated to occur this year at a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion, setting the stage for a massive financial windfall across both early-stage and later-stage investors. Even evaluated against the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by numerous venture capital firms and early backers already total billions of dollars.

Coatue and Early Backers Report Major Paper Gains

Among the primary institutional investors, Coatue initially backed the startup in 2025 at a valuation of $183 billion and co-led the company's last two funding rounds. Having poured a cumulative total of $4.75 billion into the enterprise, that stake is valued at approximately $7.5 billion according to a person familiar with the matter, though Coatue declined to comment on the figures.

Individual and Institutional Stakeholders

Detailed figures published by Bloomberg outline the estimated worth of several prominent financial backers based on the latest round's pricing. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who participated in the company's Series A financing in 2021 when the startup was valued at $461 million according to PitchBook data, currently maintains roughly a 1% ownership stake. Even at current private valuations, that personal holding is valued at nearly $10 billion.

Additional heavyweight backers have achieved extraordinary multipliers on their deployed capital. The investment outfit ICONIQ deployed a $6 billion check last year at a time when the enterprise was valued at $183 billion. That substantial late-stage commitment has expanded in value to $17 billion and holds potential to double further upon the completion of a public offering.

Venture Capital Firms See Exponential Growth

Menlo Ventures took the lead on the startup's Series D financing, deploying over $1 billion across multiple investments that have collectively grown into a stake worth $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia Capital entered the cap table for the first time earlier in the year at a private valuation of $380 billion, securing approximately a 1% ownership share through a $3 billion investment that has already more than doubled in paper value.

Sound Ventures, established by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, contributed $35 million during the 2023 Series C round before adding an extra $400 million, securing a position worth billions today. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to launch a new VC firm alongside Morgan Beller. Furthermore, Spark Capital—recognized as the sole venture firm holding a board seat at Anthropic—put $75 million into that same 2023 Series C round at a $5 billion valuation, watching that position multiply more than ninetyfold to reach a value of $7 billion.
