Photon Secures $4.5M to Help Replace Apps with Agents
The artificial intelligence startup behind a symbolic app funeral has closed a seed funding round following rapid growth in developer sign-ups and revenue.

Funding and Market Thesis
The artificial intelligence startup Photon has secured $4.5 million in seed funding to support its developer products and platform expansion. The round was co-led by Gradient and A*, with participation from Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman, and various angel investors. The funding follows a period of significant growth for the company, which reports signing up over 40,000 developers and achieving a tenfold increase in revenue over just four months.
Photon's core thesis centers on the belief that consumers will increasingly bypass traditional mobile app stores in favor of AI agents that operate directly within existing communication channels. To emphasize this outlook, the startup previously hosted a symbolic app funeral in San Francisco, featuring panels from industry participants and a mock coffin for app icons.
Tools for Multi-Platform Agents
While major consumer AI initiatives explore alternative deployment strategies, Photon focuses on supplying developers with infrastructure to make existing applications function smoothly across messaging services. The company offers a suite of tools including a unified API, an extensible channel framework, a command-line interface, and an observability suite. Together, these tools enable agent experiences to run over iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, RCS, email, and voice platforms.
The platform's origins trace back to co-founders Daniel Tian and Ryan Zhu, who built consumer applications as students and frequently encountered discoverability bottlenecks. By engineering an agent that worked natively within Apple's Messages, they found a way to reach users through an everyday interface. After releasing their open-source project on GitHub, thousands of developers adopted the technology, prompting Tian to leave his program at UPenn and Zhu to depart high school.
Platform Scaling and Commercial Growth
Today, the open-source version accounts for the vast majority of Photon's usage. However, the founders introduced a managed platform with subscription tiers in April. This hosted version delivers higher uptime compared to local machine setups and meets SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance standards, making it suitable for healthcare and enterprise applications.
The platform has attracted numerous corporate clients across fintech, insurance, dating, and consumer tech. Customers utilizing the service include Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Ditto, Rho, Fliptexts, and Slashy. Integration partners also feature Vercel and Nous Research, whose Hermes agent defaults to Photon as its iMessage layer, alongside framework integrations with LangChain, Mastra, Convex, Render, Railway, and Telnyx.
Future Outlook on Agent-to-Agent Communication
Looking ahead, CEO Daniel Tian anticipates that the market will eventually expand beyond human-to-agent interactions to include agent-to-agent communication layers. In this future framework, an individual's primary assistant could autonomously discover and coordinate with specialized service agents—such as flight or hotel booking tools—to streamline complex tasks. As the startup continues to scale its operations, it aims to position its technology at the center of this emerging ecosystem.
