Open-Source Tool Lets AI Design Complex LEGO Builds

A new open-source toolkit enables frontier artificial intelligence models to generate detailed, multi-thousand-piece LEGO designs through automated Python scripts and CAD file outputs.

AI Models Tackle Complex LEGO Architecture

Artificial intelligence models are expanding into physical design concepts with the help of the open-source LDraw Nova project, developed by Carlos Antelo. The toolkit allows general artificial intelligence models to design elaborate structures comprising thousands of real pieces directly from text prompts. For instance, prompting Claude Opus 5.5 to create "the most beautiful model that comes to your mind" resulted in a detailed Sakura Garden layout featuring a five-story pagoda, a koi pond, and cherry trees totaling 2,175 pieces.

Rather than manually placing individual bricks, the models utilize Python tools to write structural programs that output the final layouts. Antelo released the project following three earlier developmental iterations, providing a framework where agents can plan and visualize concepts systematically.

How the LDraw Nova Pipeline Works

The framework relies on the LDraw text format, a system where each placed LEGO component is positioned using a single line of text. Compatible software programs like LDView, LeoCAD, and Studio can open the resulting files. The underlying workflow involves an AI agent creating a comprehensive JSON plan for the model and its submodels, translating that blueprint into a Python program, and then generating the final LDraw source output.

To ensure accuracy, the agent can render the model as an image, inspect the visual result, make adjustments, and repeat the loop until it considers the build finished. This method allows the software to bypass complex geometry math, leaning instead on the code-generation strengths of advanced language models.

Current Capabilities and Model Breakdown

LDraw Nova functions as a Docker web application compatible with multiple AI providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and OpenRouter. The web application gallery attributes specific builds to their respective AI creators and prompts. Models such as GPT-6 Astra have been used to design a Cathedral and a Tidal Observatory, while Claude Opus 5.5 handled the Sakura Garden and an unfinished Atlas Crane.

Additionally, the system can integrate optional semantic search tools such as jev-rerank, backed by TypeSafe’s Jev System One AI model, which was deployed during Astra's Cathedral build to refine part searches.

Limitations and Financial Considerations

Despite the impressive scale of the digital designs, none of the models have been assembled using real bricks yet. Antelo noted that collecting thousands of parts for larger structures would be exceptionally difficult, and he admits he "didn't even try" building them physically.

The project also faces technical and financial hurdles. Nova currently lacks dedicated physics modeling, meaning that while collisions are managed, structural stability is not explicitly verified during generation. Furthermore, running high-end agents comes with notable expenses; Antelo estimated that using Astra to design a single Technic mechanism incurs roughly $5 in token costs.

Future Outlook for AI-Driven Fabrication

Antelo's overarching objective is to develop tooling capable of empowering low-end agents to perform iterative building tasks. Future updates on the project's roadmap include support for minifigures, Technic machines, and engines, alongside improvements to experimental Meta Quest 3 virtual reality integration.

As AI agents increasingly bridge the gap between code generation and physical manufacturing through platforms like Model Context Protocol servers, tools like LDraw Nova offer a glimpse into how enthusiasts might automate the design of complex custom sets.
