OpenAI Introduces LifeVal Benchmark for Everyday Tasks
OpenAI has unveiled LifeVal, a new benchmark designed to evaluate how well artificial intelligence models help individuals manage practical everyday tasks and responsibilities.

Introduction to LifeVal
OpenAI has officially announced LifeVal, a benchmark measuring how well artificial intelligence helps people complete everyday tasks. According to information released on OpenAI News, the benchmark covers practical challenges ranging from finding childcare to managing personal finances and navigating government paperwork.
The company states that its core mission is ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. With more than one billion weekly users relying on ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to build systems that assist with the tangible, day-to-day requirements of modern life rather than simply providing chat responses or basic advice.

Building the Benchmark Dataset
To identify the tasks that people value most, OpenAI developers began by analyzing two comprehensive studies tracking daily human routines: the American Time Use Survey and the Multinational Time Use Study. These datasets catalog everyday activities across various demographics, times of day, and seasonal shifts.
To further pinpoint where individuals would find AI assistance most valuable, OpenAI expanded on these existing surveys with a demographically representative study consisting of 3,995 respondents. Participants were asked a series of questions to determine which daily obligations and responsibilities they most wanted a personal assistant to handle.
The resulting framework centers on several critical areas of daily life. These focus areas include caregiving, health, education, household administration, personal finances, shopping, and accessing various government services.

Practical Workflows and Scenarios
OpenAI's evaluation measures model performance across a variety of realistic practical workflows. Examples include organizing community volunteer forces for flood preparation, enrolling children in appropriate local kindergartens after a family relocation, and finding suitable housing within specified budget and commuting constraints.
Additional evaluation scenarios involve setting up remote connectivity options for family members to share activities, and creating structured meal preparation and care plans for parents who are adjusting to new medical diagnoses, such as diabetes.
According to the company, current models score very highly on many of these tested LifeVal tasks, reflecting significant improvements over the course of the past year.

Moving Toward Agentic Assistants
Over the past year, OpenAI reports training its models to become faster, more capable, and better aligned regarding browser usage, computer tasks, and direct software connectors. Enabling these capabilities within ChatGPT allows the system to move beyond a traditional conversational interface and function closer to an agentic personal assistant capable of taking direct action.
OpenAI notes that measuring progress requires looking past traditional academic assessments of model knowledge. Instead, the company emphasizes the importance of evaluating how successfully AI models help people navigate complex decisions and complete meaningful responsibilities in everyday life, with LifeVal representing an initial step toward that objective.
