Building an Agentic Operating System for Legal Teams

Founded in Stockholm in 2023, [Legora (opens in a new window)](https://www.legora.com/) is developing what CEO and co-founder Max Junestrand describes as "the agentic operating system for legal work." The platform aims to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the everyday workflows that lawyers rely upon.

The company was established based on the insight that legal teams face severe time constraints, which often prevents important work from being completed. Junestrand's ambition is for every piece of legal work globally to eventually run on the platform, easing the burden traditionally placed on junior lawyers reviewing massive numbers of contracts overnight.

OpenAI has been involved with the company from its earliest stages, with the release of GPT-3.5 enabling many of the initial legal use cases explored by the founding team. Today, OpenAI serves as a key model provider, powering core functions across the legal AI platform from agentic tasks to large-scale document reviews.

AI-Native Engineering and Rapid Development

Legora's application of artificial intelligence extends beyond its commercial offering into its own internal operations. CTO Jacob Lauritzen notes that coding agents have fundamentally altered how quickly the engineering team can prototype and develop new ideas.

Rather than committing extensive engineering time to a single research path, teams can explore up to 20 different solutions simultaneously and identify the most effective approach within days. Furthermore, coding agents can scan millions of lines of logs to diagnose product bugs, sometimes reducing the time from a bug report to a working fix to approximately five minutes.

While customers do not directly see these internal engineering efficiencies, they experience the results through faster problem resolution, quicker product feedback loops, and early testing of new ideas throughout the development cycle.

Transforming Internal Legal Operations

Legora's internal legal department has undergone a similar transformation through the deployment of AI-native workflows. General Counsel Emma Kadri Bergström points to non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) as a primary example of how routine tasks have been automated.

By analyzing historically signed agreements, the legal team created a playbook allowing the system to take a first pass at incoming NDAs and flag terms falling outside acceptable parameters. Previously, reviewing these documents consumed roughly 20% of the legal team's capacity, whereas today that figure sits below 1%.

This reclaimed time has supported the company's rapid expansion over the past year, which included scaling from three offices to 18, completing three financing rounds, and executing five acquisitions. Additionally, AI agents assist with M&A diligence by reviewing contracts and surfacing relevant information across deal sets.

Broader Analysis and Measurable Customer Results

For external clients, the technology offers more than just speed; it expands the overall scope of achievable work. Global Head of Legal Engineering Alex Fortescue-Webb explains that traditional reviews often force teams to focus narrowly on top-tier contracts due to time and cost limitations.

Using Legora's Tabular Review workflow, systems can analyze thousands of contracts across multiple parameters in minutes, allowing lawyers to apply detailed scrutiny much more broadly and surface risks that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Measurable outcomes are already visible among enterprise clients. Junestrand highlighted a Fortune 100 customer that achieved a 90% faster contract turnaround, saved more than $20 million on external litigation and diligence, and returned 9.5 hours per lawyer each week for higher-value responsibilities.

Additionally, legal teams can integrate these capabilities directly into their daily routines by utilizing the [Legora plugin for ChatGPT ](https://openai.com/business/plugins/legora/) during conversations.
