Google Health 5.11 Rollout Brings Health Guardian and Sleep Upgrades

Expanded Automatic Activity Tracking

Google is rolling out Google Health 5.11 this week as a rather big update for Fitbit trackers and the Pixel Watch, according to details shared by 9to5Google in a report detailing the official release notes. The rollout includes an upgraded automatic activity tracking capability currently available for the Fitbit Air, Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5, with the Fitbit Edge set to receive the capabilities at launch on October 27.

The updated platform expands the number of detectable activities from 10 up to 100, incorporating strength training, swimming, racket sports, and team sports. By utilizing contextual reasoning, the system factors in workout routines, historical data, and manual edits to deliver nearly double the detection accuracy while cutting missed workouts by more than half. Workouts meeting a minimum duration threshold of 15 minutes with a sustained elevated heart rate are automatically logged, after which a summary is delivered to the Google Health app typically within 30 minutes. Furthermore, confirming or editing activities allows the feature to continuously learn unique patterns to refine future predictions.

Health Guardian Features for Fitbit Air and Edge

Google Health Premium subscribers using the Fitbit Air and Edge can access two distinct Health Guardian features. Users can set up blood pressure and insulin resistance trends now, with the first reports scheduled for availability at the beginning of November.

Blood pressure trends allow users to track patterns before they put strain on the heart, appearing in the Health Guardian section of the Health tab for those who have worn their Fitbit Air for five or more consecutive days in October. Meanwhile, insulin resistance trends track monthly shifts in metabolic health for individuals who have worn their watch for seven or more days and nights during the same month.

Metabolic Updates and Lingo by Abbott Syncing

Within the app, blood glucose has been updated to simply read 'Glucose' alongside refreshed charts and graphs. Users can now establish custom time-in-range goals for continuous glucose monitor data by navigating to the Metabolic section of the Health tab, selecting Glucose, opening Settings, and tapping Set goal.

In the US, the update introduces faster syncing with Lingo by Abbott. Users can connect Lingo directly to the app so that glucose data syncs faster, displaying within 30 minutes of a reading. Google Health Premium members can also utilize Google Health Coach to answer questions about their glucose trends by accessing partner applications via the profile icon.

Improved Sleep Tracking and Availability

Version 5.11 also introduces enhancements to sleep tracking, specifically targeting wake detection and nap editing. The platform now factors in steps data to more accurately track short awakenings, such as getting up to use the bathroom during the night. Additionally, users retain full control over their sleep data with easier nap editing, allowing unwanted nap cards to be removed directly from the interface.

The application update is currently available on iOS and is continuing its rollout for Android users. Detailed information regarding the software package can be reviewed through official support channels.
