Figma Announces New Features to Define How Agents Work
Design platform Figma has introduced new Markdown-based tools, code libraries, and integrations to help govern how internal and third-party AI agents operate on its platform.

New Tools to Govern AI Agents
Design platform [Figma](https://techcrunch.com/tag/figma/) has announced a new Markdown-based editor and additional platform updates designed to help companies define their design systems, bring in code libraries, and integrate with headless content management systems. Unveiled during the company’s first Config event in India, the updates aim to provide clear boundaries and definitions so that both internal and third-party AI agents can better adhere to a brand's specific design rules.
As part of this rollout, the platform debuted a feature called Figma Specs. This Markdown editor allows users to define their design language simply, creating documents that serve as a reference for both human teams and AI agents while designing. Specs can function as a standalone file on the canvas or alongside existing workflows, allowing users to reference canvas elements, embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs.
Managing Context and Predictability
Teams can incorporate additional context about their design systems, including design libraries, code libraries, and established guidelines. Agents can then refer back to this centralized system to follow rules more reliably. Following the recent expansion of its agent on canvas to a broader user base, Figma is supplying these steering tools to address the non-deterministic nature of AI and drive more predictable outcomes.
Speaking about the shift in software development, Figma’s chief design officer Loredana Crisan noted that software teams increasingly use code to discover and design products rather than just for final releases. The platform also announced that it is supporting over 20 new tools with its Model Context Protocol (MCP), including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam.
Code Layers Move to Open Beta
In addition to its agent-focused updates, Figma has transitioned its code layers feature into an open beta. Initially [announced this feature](https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/24/figma-adds-code-layers-support-for-animations-more-ai-features-in-new-update/) in private beta back in June, the function adds coding directly to designs on the canvas to support more interactive prototypes. Users can instruct the agent to convert a design into code or modify segments of code to iterate smoothly on a prototype.
CMS Integration and Regional Growth
Following its acquisition of the [open-source headless CMS Payload](https://www.figma.com/blog/payload-joins-figma/), Figma is now integrating the content management system with its Figma Make product. This integration targets the generation of dynamic websites and direct content management, backed by Payload experiencing a sixfold increase in downloads over the preceding 12 months.
Figma highlighted the significance of the region during its event, noting that the country is its largest user market outside of the United States. Having established its [first office in India late last year with sales](https://techcrunch.com/2025/11/12/figma-bets-on-india-to-expand-beyond-design/), partnerships, and product support functions, the platform is currently utilized by 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
