Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 Context

Every October, Cybersecurity Awareness Month reminds users of the importance of protecting their digital lives. The theme for 2026 is 'Don't Make It Easy for Them,' with the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) providing simple, actionable steps users can take to make it harder for cybercriminals to attack.

Mozilla notes that one of the most common excuses for neglecting online security is a perceived lack of time or money. The company counters that Firefox provides several free features designed to make it easier to protect your online life and harder for cybercriminals to target you, all at no cost.

Password Manager: Unique Passwords for Every Account

Reused passwords remain one of the easiest ways attackers break into multiple accounts. If one site is breached, login details can be tested on many others through credential stuffing. Firefox's free password manager can generate and securely store a strong, unique password per site, which Mozilla describes as the single highest-leverage fix against password stuffing.

For convenience, Firefox can automatically fill saved login information on previously visited sites. Users retain the option to turn off password saving for specific websites or completely, which is useful on shared devices. Stored logins can be managed on a singular device at any time, and passwords saved in other popular browsers can be imported to get a head start.

A free Mozilla account enables safe syncing of passwords across signed-in devices, extending the password manager's utility beyond a single machine.

Built-in VPN: Protection on Public Networks

Connecting to public Wi-Fi at airports, libraries, or conferences can expose a user's IP address, approximate location, and browsing activity on networks they don't control. While Firefox already encrypts traffic with HTTPS, the built-in VPN feature routes browsing traffic through a proxy network, hiding the user's IP address before it reaches a website. Sites see a proxy IP address instead of the user's own.

The browser-based VPN offers an industry-leading 50 gigabytes of free VPN-browsing each month with no extension or extra app to install. Users simply sign in, turn it on, and start browsing. Firefox's free built-in VPN first launched on desktop in March, later expanding to Android in July. Unlike a standalone or full-service VPN, it is designed specifically to protect browsing traffic within Firefox, not the entire device. Apps, downloads, and other system traffic are not routed through the browser-based VPN.

For people who need broader, device-wide VPN protection, Mozilla also offers a separate paid VPN service. Users can check the full list of regions where built-in VPN in Firefox is currently available and learn more about the differences between Firefox's free built-in VPN and Mozilla VPN through Mozilla's documentation.

Firefox Relay: Email and Phone Number Masking

Each time a personal email address is shared for online purchases, event RSVPs, or app sign-ups, users trust the site owner to protect their information. Yet spam piles up and breaches can still happen. Firefox Relay provides a smarter way to share by generating secure, random email masks to use whenever a website, store, or app asks for an email address. Messages are forwarded to the real email while keeping the user's identity hidden from senders.

If one service gets compromised, other accounts stay protected because each mask is unique. Earlier this year, Firefox increased its limit to 50 free email masks, allowing users to shield dozens of logins at no cost. In the U.S. and Canada, Relay can also shield phone numbers, letting users receive calls and texts through masks and reply without exposing their real number.

Always-On Browser Protections

Even when users forget to actively engage protection tools like the password manager, VPN, or Relay, Firefox operates multiple always-on features to help keep sessions secure and private. These include enhanced tracking protection to block hidden scripts and known trackers that follow users across the web, browser fingerprinting protection to prevent sites from building a unique profile of the device, and warnings about deceptive or malicious websites.

Together, Firefox's individual and always-on security features work to help keep browsing safe and data private. Mozilla encourages users to take a moment during Cybersecurity Awareness Month to build new habits, try out the free cybersecurity tools, and make life more difficult for cybercriminals.
